I have recently updated my P5WD2 Premium to the 0422 bios, and now Windows
XP Pro (SP2) will not boot past the logo screen! It will eventually crash
to a blue screen of death after about 30 seconds or so.

Here are my specs:
P5WD2 Premium (BIOS 0422)
1GB Corsair TWIN2X1024A-6400 (DDR2-800Mhz)
ATI All-in-Wonder X600 Pro (PCI Express-16)
Maxtor 200GB S-ATA drive (Model 6L200M0) on Intel ICH7 SATA1 connector
WDC 120GB IDE/ATA drive (Model WD1200JB) on BLUE Intel ICH7 Primary IDE
Plextor PX-716SA DVD-RW drive on Intel ICH7 SATA3 connector

IDE Configuration -> "Configure SATA As" set to "AHCI" in BIOS.

I installed WinXP Pro SP2 with the F6 option, and used the Intel ICH7R
SATA disk using my ***original BIOS of 0124.***
This install went fine.

The Maxtor drive is my boot drive, and the Western Digital is my 'data'
drive.

Installed all the latest drivers: Intel Chipset, Intel Matrix Storage
Manager, Intel and Marvell nic drivers, ITE and Silicon Image storage
drivers, etc.

SIDE NOTE: Device Manager shows an "Unknown device" in the Other devices
category. The 'Location' shows 'on Intel(R) 82801GB/GR (ICH7 Family) LPC
Interface Controller -27B8" Can someone tell me how to fix this
annoyance/problem??
Device status says the drivers for this device are not installed (Code 28)
However, under the System devices category, it lists the same device with
no problems!

Anyway, as I stated in the beginning of this post, after updating the BIOS
to 0422, Windows XP Pro SP2 will crap out with a blue screen of death
after its initial bootup logo!
It seems like something with the 0422 BIOS affected the SATA/RAID settings
of the Intel ICH7R Southbridge storage!!

*** If I change the 'Configure SATA As' setting to use 'Standard IDE' in
the BIOS, instead of 'AHCI', guess what?.... Windows XP Pro SP2 boots up
fine again, with its expected 'find new hardware' boxes coming up.
***

Now I really do not want to use my nice S-ATA drive in P-ATA mode, so I
was lucky enough to remember the motherboard CD has a BIOS file on it.
I booted up into DOS, and flashed the BIOS, which leaves me with BIOS 0204
now. This BIOS seems to work with AHCI setting for my S-ATA drive again.
Come on ASUS, what's up with BIOS 0422??
Anyone else experiencing this similar problem?

Btw, I have another issue/conflict with my video card and the onboard
sound, but I'll save that for another post.

If anyone can help with the above problem, and associated side note issue
of 'unknown device', I would be very thankful!

TIA!

I recently flashed to bios 0422 and noticed that 'something' changed with
the southbridge. When I booted into XP sP2 my two optical drives on the
PATA port were redetected. I could see this happening from within explorer
as the drives disappeared and then reappeared.

About getting a blue screen because of AHCI and 0422, I wouldn't really
know. But, I have two Seagate SATA 80GB NCQ drives with each one hooked to
a master channel (third and fourth when looking in the bios). I have the
controller set up as AHCI. After I flashed to 0422, I did not experience a
blue screen. However, if I change the controller setting to Enhanced Mode
or Compatible Mode rather than AHCI, then I get a blue screen when loading
Windows. This might suggest that the driver being used is in fact not
IASTOR.SYS. Just an idea. One other thing, I didn't use an F6 floppy but
instead integrated the driver into the XP install, if that may mean
something.

The driver for the unknown device is on the cd that came with the
motherboard. It is: ATK0110 ACPI UTILITY and it's located in Software
\AIBooster\Acpi\WIN2000. Not quite sure what this driver is supposed to do.

Where do you get the new bios from?

I run asus update and it says nothing can be found. Im on the original bios
0124 i think.

Thanks.

It should be listed in the download section on their website.

Correct, ASUS has new BIOS files on their web site.

By the way, thanks for your reply to my post. I easily fixed the 'unknown
device', though I also wonder what that ATK0110 ACPI UTILITY drive does.

As for BIOS 0422, I called ASUS tech support and let them know about the
problem with SATA hard drives on the ICH7R connector, set as 'AHCI'.
Hopefully they will escalate it to their engineers, and in turn come out
with a new BIOS that actually works correctly.

In the meantime, does anyone have BIOS 0304 for the P5WD2 Premium? It
seems like people on the asus.com forum boards have that. If anyone has
it, can I get it?
Thanks.

I just assembled the same type of computer and I am finding the
processor getting really hot. almost (96.o C)
Have not even loaded the operating system yet!!
Can any one tell what degree they are running at?

Her are my specs;
Asus Mother Board P5WD2
Intel Pentium D processor 830
550 watt Antec power supply
SATA hard disk
SATA DVD drive
2 Gigs of Corsair memory

Any ideas?
Tony

Tony,
Do you have enough cooling for your system? Air/Water, case fans, etc...

By the way, I am able to use BIOS 0422 now.
I slightly changed my configuration... This is what I have now:

P5WD2 Premium (BIOS 0422)
Intel Pentium 4 3.8Ghz CPU
1GB Corsair TWIN2X1024A-6400 (DDR2-800Mhz)
ATI All-in-Wonder X600 Pro (PCI Express-16)
Maxtor 200GB S-ATA drive (Model 6L200M0) on Intel ICH7 SATA1 connector
Maxtor 200GB S-ATA drive (Model 6L200S0) on Intel ICH7 SATA2 connector
WDC 120GB IDE/ATA drive (Model WD1200JB) on BLUE Intel ICH7 Primary IDE
Plextor PX-716SA DVD-RW drive on Intel SI3132 SATA connector

IDE Configuration -> "Configure SATA As" set to "RAID" in BIOS.

I have a RAID0 set now, with both Maxtor drives. It seems to run fine.

The problem that I have seems to be with the Plextor drive. A Plextor
technician said they do not support these SATA controllers.
My Plextor drive works, but occasionally it will not read the media in the
drive at times.
This occurs with it plugged into the ICH7R SATA controller, or the SI 3132
SATA controller. I am thinking I might RMA the Plextor PX-716SA back to
Newegg in exchange for the Plextor PX-716A (standard ATAPI/IDE drive)
I have not tried switching the SATA cable yet. The cable that comes with
the Plextor is much longer than the SATA cables that come with the
motherboard. I will switch it to that and see what happens.
Does anyone else have the Plextor PX-716SA and the P5WD2 Premium?? If so,
does the Plextor drive work flawlessly??

William,
Thanks very much for the reply! Here is my update. I did have two
fans that are temperamental and they are on there way for my supposedly
cool case from Thermaltake "Tsunami". Even when all three fans plus
the cpu fan were going it became quickly Hot.
I called Intel and told them my temperature problems. They quickly
responded to me about sending me a new thermal pad and a backup, with
even verifying the retail box the processor came in. Seems like they
know something?
I removed the fan/heatsink and the thermal pad seemed a bit shifted. I
removed it the puddy like pad from both ends and I'm just waiting on
the shipment from Intel to arrive to reassemble it and give her another
start.
I purchased from New Egg a Hitachi Sata HD drive 7200 400G 8M
A Plextor DVD +R/RW "PX-716SA/SW
I do need to get it in the Raid position because it was not reading in
the Primary position but the Third position??
Much of this is very new to me even though this is my third computer I
built with my mentor. Any help on the raid would be
appreciated.William,
