Hi I'm wondering if anyone has tried this combination. According to the OCZ
site, one of the recommended products for my board is:
http://www.ocztechnology.com/products/memory/ocz_ddr2_pc2_4200_gold_series
This isn't on the Asus "qualified vendors list". Does this mean anything or
should it work anyway. TY
No intelligence goes into the Asus QVL. They test what they have on
hand, and don't even seem to be bribed by the memory companies. Just
because a product is not on the Asus list, does not imply anything
about its operation. Similarly, when a memory company lists products
they think will work with your motherboard, it does not mean they
have tested it. Some companies look at the paper specification for
the motherboard, and recommend memory based on that. There are
probably 10,000 different motherboard models out there, and no
company can afford to buy all of them.
The best kind of "QVL", is feedback from other users.
Occasionally, someone will make a blanket statement, that
company "X" memory chips don't work with chipset "Y". If
you cannot see underneath the heat spreader on a module,
that knowledge is mostly useless. The companies making
DIMMs, reserve the right to change memory chip suppliers
at any time, which means a module that is "good" today,
can be "bad" tomorrow.
The only thing that buying a brand name memory gets you,
is the reputation behind the company. If a company is known
to cut corners, in terms of product testing, that gets
known pretty quickly. (Say, for example, a lot of people
claim they had to return their "value memory", to find
a good one.) Use the Newegg site, and if a memory module
has enough reviews written about it by customers, you
may get an idea of how good the product is.
