I am just about to build my new computer. On my old IDE raid array I ran
them on separate channels on a highpoint controller and I was just wondering
what the best setup would be on a P5AD2.
Is is better to run the two drivers on the southbridge or on the Silicone
Image thingy. Aslo does it matter which socket is used. I will be running no
other disks on these.
Thanks

From a bandwidth perspective, the Southbridge is a better place
to connect SATA. But the quality of the drivers, the stripe size you
select, and the brand of drives also make a difference, and
for more details you'd have to search the private forums to
get actual benchmarks. Like abxzone.com, for example.
You describe it as an "old IDE raid array" - so it is PATA
and not SATA ? In that case, I would think the ITE8212 PATA
RAID controller is the only place to go, as the Southbridge only
has one PATA connector. (Using SATA to PATA converters like
Rockethead or Serillel, is not recommended by all SATA chip
manufacturers, so you'll need to do some in depth research
to get something like that to work reliably. I seem to
remember that Intel doesn't like the use of those kinds of
adapters. Certain brands/models of those converters never
worked well, and in other cases, there are combinations
of motherboard chip and converter that don't work well.)
I think the Deluxe and Premium boards both have the same
disk drive options, so my comments should apply to both
boards (don't know which one you've got of the two).
You can download the manual from the Asus download page,
and it is easier to read the manual online than to read
the tiny printed version that comes with the product.
I think after one pass through the manual, you'll be much
more comfortable setting up the board.
