here is a small success story that may help others: on my P5A Ver-1.06 with
bios 1101.005 winXp ran perfectly, until i installed SP1.- from then on I
could no longer format diskettes. the formatting would work normally until
10 to 20 %, then hang and abort. only after formatting a lot of new
diskettes, all with this failure, did I suspect SP1.- deinstalling SP1 cured
all problems. - ! - in short: installing the patch in MS KB 811840
completely cured this problem, although the explanation in this KB article
is rather different and does not mention this failure and correction. good
luck to you all.

Thanks for the info, note that article 811839 explains the problem that resulted in the 811840 solution. I had always wondered why, when running "setiathome", the formats always seemed to work. Apparantly, xp didnt bother changing that mode from c2 to c3 since seti was keeping the cpu busy and when I was not running seti, the format would frequently fail. Not just on the P5A, have seen this on others computers. I had got in the habit of using "format /u /f:1440 a:" as I thought that the media byte had not been set properly on pre-formatted diskettes, but it actually m$oft's problem after.
After reading your post I google'ed this problem and found more info: http://www.nibbleguru.com/probs/136/40 look about 2/3 way down.
completely cured this problem, although the explanation in this KB article

luck to you all.
