I've a small problem with the "new" final bios (1010). After flashing the
new bios I've installed Windows98SE and everything was ok until I tried to
shutdown the PC. Normally there appears a screen with something like "Now
you can shut down your pc", but now the PC reboots instead. With the old
bios it worked properly, so I think that it has something to do with the
power-supply, because I'm using the old AT-power-supply and not an ATX.

Does anybody know, how I can fix it? Unfortunately I didn't saved the old
bios...

Thanks!

use the 10.11.005 9 (beta) bios, buy an ATX power supply, add a momentary
on/off switch, reinstall WIN98SE after specifying that acpi is to be used
(there is a switch to use on the setup exe program) and you will get the
equivalent of the P5A
there is a way to activate acpi after installing win98se but i dont remember
how to do it. something in the registery and then do a "add new hardware"
Also, if you have ethernet boards, scsi, etc that are old, they may not be
acpi capable so you might want to google for whether they can suspend and
resume or not. At the very least when you request shutdown it will actually
turn off.

I turned my P5A-B into a full ATX type that could suspend and resume just
like the more modern systems. It was also maxed out with K6/3"+"550. I
also had a P5A Both worked fine with 98se and could suspend and resume.

i tink you want it to just turn off and not bother with that message? use
atx power supply.

Ok. First - thank you for your answer. I believe that it will work wit an
ATX-power-supply, but I don't know why I should buy a new power-supply,
while the old one is still working without problems. My fault was, that I
forgot to make a backup of the old bios so I cannot flash it back, what
would solve my problem. I don't know why Asus developed only a bios-version
for systems with ATX-power-supplys. It should be possible for everyone to
choose the "right" version of the bios by himself. Or it should be possible
to download the old (doesn't matter if buggy or not) bios versions... If
someone knows where I can get older bios versions (1007, 1008 or 1009), so
it would be very helpful for me if you'd like to share this information with
me.

Thanks.

I've found some old bios versions here:

ftp://ftp.mathematik.uni-marburg.de/pub/mirror/asus/mb/sock7/ali/p5a-b/

Thanks anyway...

new bios gets you 128gb disk capacity, those old ones go up to 32gb only as
i recall. I have picked up atx power supply from dumpsters on occassions.
Was nice of asus to provide both ATX and AT connectors on that motherboard,
not many know about using the ATX and getting ACPI to work.

ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/asus/mb/sock7/ali

Generally, the FTP sites will have a more comprehensive selection than the
web sites. Faster, also.

There is also a German ASUS site at ftp.asus.com.de.

Yes, you're right - the new bios supports more cpus and hardware, but
without a ATX-power-supply you don't have the full ACPI-support... Btw. I
found out that the os-setup (in my case Win98SE) installs automatically the
ACPI-version of the os, if a bios has been found that's at least dated
1999 - so I had to downgrade my bios to something like the 1004-version (a
bit too buggy for me). By installing the os using a parameter (in case of
Win98SE: "setup.exe /pi") you can install it without the ACPI-support and
this has solved my problem...
