hi i have this motherboard with the reccomended ram, i keeps locking up in
win xp i did a clean install and still locks up. i have a p4 2.8 with 512mb
1066 mem. what could it be i also have the first version of the board with
out the fan on the chip

what version of board?

it should have a serial number (about 10 digits - on box) and a revision
number on it (near the pci slots i think) and the early boards were really
prone to messing up ... check forums on asus' site for help (if they work!)
.... or try the forums here .... http://www.hardocp.com/ there's a legendary
post of a zillion replies that deals with this, if it's still active ...

i have the same board, but a new edition with the fan and same cpu - i have
to clock it down slightly to run (133 to 130) ... still flies along mind ...

also, make sure you have the 32bit ram, not the 16bit - not sure if they fit
in slots - but it has been known for people to buy wrong ones ...

as a guess you've got a dodgy edition of the board without the fan - sorry,
but unless you install that extra fan - you may be sending it back ... and
even if you do install it, seems like there's no guarantees

I have a p4t533 revision 1.03 and the serial no. starts off with 2CZ. The
only problem I have had is that if I overclock the FSB past 140 without
turning the memory down to 4/3 it bluescreens at boot up. I normally run at
137 fsb at 4/4 and the memory runs at 548. As the other poster said, the
right kind of memory is a necessity for proper operation. The early p4t533
boards did have internal power supply problems. I have had good luck with
this version of the board, however.

Some early model of the P4T533 had a power supply bug, send it back if
that's the case (locking up/crashing is the symptom). The really "good"
ones are those starting with serial numbers 2B (November 02), 2C
(December 03) or any starting with a "3", these all have a fan on the
chipset as well (although that is apparently not the real primay fix).
It's certainly not the case that all of the earlier ones are bad, some
were ok, but quite a few of them had problems.

This matter not withstanding, if you get a "good" P4T533, with RIMM4200
memory, it is a truly excellent motherboard, one of the best made, and
it will keep right up there with the new 875 and 865 boards (the memory
system is actually still faster, but it's offset by the faster 800 MHz
FSB in the newer boards, still the overall net result is very close).
