Why have I never seen any articles on the P4S800 motherboard here? Is it
because no-one uses it or is it because those who do never have any
problems with it?

I haven't built a new computer since the days of the 486 chip but a
couple of days ago I built one with a P4S800 and everything went like a
dream. Far easier than when I built the last 486 as far as I can
remember.

Same here, 3.0GHz P4S800D-E Deluxe with 2 SATA drives working great, no
problem.
Except the on-board sound which has a low S/N ratio, but I knew that from a
review before I bought this mobo.

The one I've just built is just the basic P4S800 but I'm intending to
upgrade my own computer soon with the P4S800D-E de luxe. Doesn't worry
me about the poor sound as I shall be using a Creative Blaster card
anyway as I use it for composing music.

Did you have any difficulty installing the SATA drives? I've seen that
other people have had problems with SATA drives on other Asus boards.

The P4S serie works fine but....I had major problems with the floppydrive
controller on the P4S800-MX (I'm 100% sure it's the board). I returned the
boards (like 10 pcs) and switched to the P4BGV..

The P4S800 motherboard, I'm sorry to say, is considered on of the least
stable boards that Asus currently makes. As the S in the model number
indicates it uses the SIS chipset instead of an Intel. That's why the board
is cheaper. SIS is known in the industry to stand for "Stability Is
Secondary." :(

Yes, I'd noticed the difference in price between the SiS and the Intel
chipsets. So it's worth paying extra for the Intel?

Don't agree at all. P4S800D-E Deluxe running very fine here.
Just read a few of the many reviews available online.
Excellent board also for overclocking.

Dave, I know the days of the horrid SIS all-in-one stuff. But be fair
to SIS who are the champions in keeping MBs cheap as against the high
pricing Intel after VIA failed in their P4 MBs. Have you tried one of
the current SIS boards? I reckon value for money that Intel is
ripping us.

The P4S800MX seems rock stable, with an DX9 card plays any game. The
P4S533 and P4S8XX is good value too. I am now having headache with
the new VIA offshoot PT880 that is nowhere like SIS. I think VIA have
now inherited this dubious bad title and SIS is fine now.
