Box has been running fine for 8 months, then on boot-up keeps saying
overclock failed and it boots for about 5 seconds then shuts down I
have to press the power button about dozen times to get box to boot.
I have cleared BOIS and flashed it, and changed memory and tried
removing all cards and doing selective startup still same problem,
have to press button about dozen times then it says overclock failed.
Oh changed power supply and button too.

What was the last thing you did when your system was running
normally ?
At this point,I would suspect a board, get another one to test your
cpu, but we could use a bit more info, like: did you try to overclock
and then it shutdown...etc...
My P4P800d was rma'd after about the same time and I suspect a faulty
north-bridge chip or capacitor(s). I kept toasting video cards...All
the hardware is running fine now on an intel board...fyi

No have not overclocked, think I will go back to Abit boards never had
a problem with them.
Thanks for the info.

It's the board...

I've seen many systems with the same symptoms you describe and the problem
was always the board.
Lately, the main reason for Asus board failure is the way in which the CPU
is installed.
If you have a boxed Intel P4 that came with the Intel heatsink and fan, then
that may be the problem.
Remove the board with CPU installed. Remove the CPU and check under the CPU
slot for any kind of bulge - where the pressure of the retaining clips have
forced the board outwards.
It might be very slight, but enough to render the board useless. This
happens over time, and might be evident from between a few months to over a
year.
The solution is to always remove Intel's plastic type thermal transfer
material and replace it with a THIN layer of silver compound such as Arctic
Silver. This must be done on first install.
It appears the combination of Asus tolerances (plus the strength of the
board layers) and the thickness of Intel's thermal transfer strip is enough
to exert too much pressure on the CPU.

Let me know what you find.

Interesting; I went to Asus boards for the same reason.... Go figure.

Thanks for the info.

I've been having exactly the same trouble with my P4T-E board. It usually
takes 24 hours before it will start up. I looked for the board warpage and
I definitely see that as a problem. Thanks for the insight.
