P4P800E delux, Raid upgrade ?

I was recently considering adding a second drive to my setup.
I'm not sure how this can be done properly preferrably using ICH5R.

Current setup under Win2k.
IDE1: MAXTOR 120GB ATA
IDE2: Master DvD writer, slave Sony DvD reader.

Where would it be best to add another drive for RAID0 ?
Can I use another identical Maxtor PATA 120GB, or is this
done with a SATA/PATA drive combo ?

If the only option is using the Promise controller, what
are your thoughts on the options.
TIA,

I'm not too clear on the raid features of the p4c800-e but I think raid on
the ICH5R is limited to s-ata and the Promise controller supplies p-ata
raid.

Thank you Rich,
I'm lost with RAID configurations from googeling too much and everyone
has a different setup and issues.. I'm just lost right now and seek advice.

If I setup a second s-ata identical drive;
Must it be connected to IDE1 and IDE2 Master,
or can I MASTER/SLAVE them ? Thus leaving the DVDroms alone on IDE2 ?

I'd like that very much... But I don't know.
TIA,

OOPS TYPO..
I meant purchasing second p-ata, and setting it Slave to the first one.

Using ICHR5 and Master Slave along with RAID on Google geve me this page.

"You are correct about the ICH5R, it cannot do RAID on IDE-- only SATA.
So if you want to run RAID using IDE drives with this mobo, indeed your
only choice is the Promise." -clintfan

Reason I see not to use Promise is that I read: "ICH5R took load off the PCI bus ".

Looks like my next best alternative will be to purchase later two matching
SATA drives hooked to the ICHR5 connectors, and leave my current Maxtor,
booting drive on IDE1, and ATA DvDroms on IDE2.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

B

You could buy an adapter for the PATA drive.

Rockethead 100

Experiences vary with those things, so you may need to do a little
reading of user experiences, to find the best solution.

"After a lot of research I eventually bought 2 other PATA/SATA
adaptors : RocketHead 100 from HighPoint Technologies, and they
were OK. There is indeed an incompability issue with these Maxtor
drives and the Marvell bridge chip used in the Abit Serillel adaptor."

I would think two PATA drives and two adapters, would allow you to
try a lot of stuff.

I agree. If you need raid0, use the p-ata / s-ata adapters or buy s-ata
drives and use the ICH5r s-ata raid. I prefer a non-raid setup myself.
Striping drives doubles the chance of a hard drive failing and the
subsequent data loss. I like my data. The performance boost is enticing
though.

Thanks both.
I never quite considered the increased risks of a HD data failure on RAID0
since my years of experience with non-raid were probem free.
45MB/s STR under PATA single drive is rather excellent for my multimedia needs;
I was just considering doubling my Drive capacity while Raid0 would double
the performance at no extra costs.. I realize now this cost is uncertainty and
data corruption risks.

Looks like the friendly solution proposed by Paul might give the reason to
purchase a second compatible PATA; And use it safely;
Then, once I become RAID friendly myself, I might go for SATA adaptors,
If I can find'em cheap enough.

Double thanks !
