Can anyone help?

I have just set up a PC for my brother, it's taken me a long time to
get it right, and now the motherboard seems unable to keep the time!

We set it in the bios, save it and then turn off the computer. Wait
for a few minutes and then go back into the bios, and it's still
exactly the same time as we set it.

I have upgraded the bios to the newest version (P4P91012.ami), but
still the same problem.

IF it is wrong, is it the battery, or the whole board? I really could
do without haveing to take out the board and send it back for a
replacement. It would be a huge inconvienience, to say the least.

Can someone point me to a setting or something that I've missed?
Please?

Thanks,
Mark.

sounds like a dead battery

Could be the battery, the 32KHz crystal used by the oscillator, or
maybe the bottom of the motherboard is shorted to a standoff. When you
place standoffs on the motherboard tray, they should line up with
holes in the motherboard. If you add extra ones which don't line up
with holes in the motherboard, then the standoff can short to conductors
on the bottom of the board.

The battery is readily available at places like Radio Shack.

I had the exact same problem. I pulled the motherboard out and used
electical tape to cover the standoffs. I also pulled the battery out and
put it back in. I've had no problems since

Perhaps, Mark Roberts might put in a new battery if the 'news' method
is not successful...

He'll be wasting his money if he does so hopefully he'll try the 'news'
method first.

Thanks everyone - you were correct - a stand-off must have been
shorting a connection.

All seems well now.

Much appreciated,
Mark.
