P4P800-VM OnBoard LAN problem

I have the OnBoard LAN enabled & the OnBoard LAN Boot ROM enabled in
the CMOS but when I attempt to establish a network connection I am
told that there is no hardware detected. If I try to connect to the
internet I get "The page can not be displayed".

Have I missed something in the installation. It is a new install.

The network is OK as there are four other computers connected to a
router and there is no problem with the other computers.

I do have an extra NIC but hate to use a PCI slot when there should a
working LAN connection on the board.

Words of wisdom will be appreciated.

Just finished a P4P800D a couple of weeks ago, and seem to remember that I
had to install a driver from the CD that came with the Asus motherboard.
It worked OK right after that. Recollection is an iffy thing here, but hope
that helps.

Have you checked the download page ? There are several drivers
on there for the LAN.

http://www.asus.com.tw/support/download/item.aspx?ModelName=P4P800-VM&Type=All&SLanguage=en-us

The MAC layer of the LAN is integrated into the ICH5 Southbridge.

For example, the 80_win9xme.zip file has a driver in it, but the strange
thing is, the .inf file is set up for vendor=0x8086 and device=0x1229.
The datasheet for the ICH5 says there is room to connect an eight pin
EEPROM to the Southbridge, and when properly programmed, the EEPROM
can change the device value from the default, which is device=0x1051
to whatever value is stored in a certain word in the EEPROM.
I can see an eight pin ATMEL chip next to the Southbridge, in the
manual, so I presume that is what Asus has done.

The driver will only install, if the vendor, device, and subsystem
match what is in the chip. So, check to see if the driver has installed
for a device like 0x8086/0x1229.

The 82562EZ is the PHY (physical layer) chip, and it has an ID as well.
The 562 takes care of autonegotiation and it has a few registers for
control in it. I don't know if the 80_win9xme files have code to
drive it as well or not.

I solved the problem and I think I remember how.

In <device manager> the ethernet connection had a yellow flag. I right
clicked on it and then it gave me the opportunity to fix the problem.
Darned if it didn't fix it. Not only that but it also found the other
computers on the network. :-)

I appreciate the help.

Thanks

I have had that happen before.
During the install of the operating system it just misses one or some of the
devices.
What you did was one way, also the other suggestion is to look on the CD
that came with the board and install them from there is correct.
