As the subject says. I've tried the drivers on the support CD and the ones
from Asus website, but Windows XP cannot find the drivers. I've manually
directed the driver update to the 3Com/english/source directory where the
driver files are stored, but with no luck so far.

System:
Asus P4P800. Bios 1008.
Pentium 4 2.53 GHz
2*256 Samsung PC3200@2700 (PAT not enabled)
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro. Catalyst 3.6 drivers
Audigy2 Platinum (WDM 383 drivers)
Windows XP SP1

In the device manager the NIC is not idenfied, but maked as an unknoen
Ethernet card. There're no IRQ conflicts.

Can anyone help?

Hmm...I know you enabled it in bios? Then try removing your sound card or
another pci card and see if it installs. If it does then reinstall the other
card that you removed. Maybe the NIC wants to be found and installed first
before any others? I believe the file XP wants to see for your card is an
(.inf) file. Look around on the Asus CD in the ethernet section and maybe it
will be in an area you didn't expect. Sometimes it will be in the root
folder of the ethernet section instead of the XP/2000 folder. Which is where
one is most likely to look for it.

Thanks I'll try that. BTW my Audigy2 soundcard has a Firewire port which is
recognized as a network adpater (1394 connection). Perhaps this is the
problem.

Hmm, I tried again and still no luck. I've directed the installer to very
possible .inf file in the 3Com directory, but it finds nada. Either the
Gigibit NIC is broken or there's a hardware conflict somewhere. Well, I
guess I just have to stick with my trusty old 3Com PCI 10/100 NIC.

I had the same problem and had to return the motherboard
for a replacement. The LAN worked for 1 day, then when
I got up the next morning, the computer was asking for the drivers
for the LAN. So I went to install the drivers but could no longer
use them. When I put in the CD that came with the Motherboard,
It should pop up a list of drivers to install and the LAN drivers are
in that list, but this time, the LAN drivers didn't show up in the list.
So I manually installed the drivers and I got a Code 10 Error (in WinXP).
The computer knows there is a new device and asks for drivers
but just won't pick up the drivers for it. And if I force the drivers to
install, I get
the Code 10 Error "Device Failed to Start".

I eventually took the motherboard back to where I got it and they came
to the conclusion that the onboard LAN was indeed dead...

I have a new P4P800 motherboard now and all has been working well for the
last
3 weeks.

Thanks for your help. It sounds exactly like the problem I have. The 3Com
Nic does not show up on the support CD list and it is impossible to install
any dirvers for it amnually. Well I think I have live with the problem. The
retailer has already tested the board once and didn't find any malfunctions,
so I had to pay $ 40 for service. I don't want to pay another $ 40.

Then if they successfully tested the onboard lan, I would enquire as
to why it doesn't work or why there is no driver for the 3com lan...

Sounds to me like they did not test everything...

No they didn't. Initially I had posting problems, so they probably just
plugged in a graphics card, som memeory sticks and hit the power switch.
I'll try installing Windows 98 and 2000 on another harddisk to see if I can
reproduce the problem. If it persist I'll take it back to the retailer for a
replacement and a refund of the first $ 40 service fee. If they claim the
NIC is working I'll demand to see a demonstration at the spot.

now your talkin...good luck man...

Hi!

Try directing the driver update to the following path on the CD:

\Drivers\Lan\3Com\English\Dsk1Copy\Windows

and select the oemsetup.inf file.

You should be presented with a list of devices. One of them should be
the 3Com Gigabit LOM (3C940). Install that driver and it should work.

Good luck.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately it didn't work. The installer does
not find any driver no matter what directory I direct it to. Also the 3Com
NIC doesn't show up on the Asus CD device list. My conclusion is that the
NIC is not working and I will RMA the motherboard as soon as possible.
