evening

wonder if someone can help me sort this problem i have.

I've hooked up 2 secondary drives to my P4P800 MB

on the primary IDE connector

120 Gb Maxtor 6Y120P0 - primary
80 Gb ST380011A - slave - new

and on the secondary IDE connector

a DVD R/W - primary
a CD ROM - slave - new

At post, I hit delete to detect the new drives and they list ok. However,
when i go into windows (running XP professional), the secondary drives dont
show up at all and windows doesnt seem to detect the new hardware.

I've done a few combination switches - keeping the Maxtor as primary -

- changing the Seagate to master on the secondary IDE connector - can see
the hdd in windows

It seems there is problem with 'windows'? detecting the secondarys? but i am
at a loss as to how i can go about fixing it, any help appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

When you add a new hard drive to a system running Windows XP it won't
show it in the system till you go into Administrative Tools and then to
Computer Management. From there you need to go into Disk Management and
from there you will see the disk, you will need to mount and format the
drive here then XP will see it. You will also be able to set the drive
letter.

ok i tried that .. went to Computer Management->System Tools->Device
Manager -> Action: Scan for new hardware - nothing showed up

then went to Storage->Disk Management-> Action: Rescan disks - still nothing

Rebooted the PC - still nothing.

Are there updated IDE drivers for the ASUS P4P800? and would flashing BIOS
do anything?

Thanks again

hold the phone :) i sorted it out

under device manager IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers

my primary IDE and Secondary IDE channels -> properties -> advanced settings
had device 1 set to None rather than Auto Detection.

thanks
