Turning speech reporter on does nothing, it still just beeps, and I just
decided to try Instant Music tonight.

Nothing happens when I press escape or try to eject a CD while the system is
off (I presume this is when you are meant to use it, right?).

What the **** is wrong with my board?

Is the Speech Reporter on that board wired into the onboard sound chip ?
If you are using an Audigy, maybe you are robbed of the opportunity to
listen to the Voice Post. I would expect at the very least, there would
have to be a cable running from the motherboard to one of the connector
blocks on a sound card for the Speech Reporter to work. Or, you could
try plugging an amplified speaker into the Lime connector on the back
of the motherboard.

As for Instant Music, maybe the same logic applies. The BIOS isn't
necessarily going to have a Sound Blaster driver inside it, it will know
about whatever AC97 chip is on the motherboard.

Try repeating your testing with any third party sound card removed
and the onboard audio enabled.

Just some ideas,
Paul

I'm using the onboard audio.

In the BIOS, "Instant Music" [Enabled] and then the "Instant Music
CDROM Drive" is pointed to the correct IDE port ?

CDROM 1x4 connector cabled to the motherboard 1x4 connector ?

Page 124 of the E1323 manual has a few notes about differences in
behavior after Instant Music is enabled:

"This feature is supported by the onboard audio AC¹97 CODEC, and
requires an optical drive (CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, or CD-RW).
1. Instant Music only supports CDs in audio format.
2. Instant Music would not work if you installed and enabled
an add-on sound card.
3. Instant Music only supports PS/2 keyboard.

Page 125 says that after Instant Music is enabled:

1. The Scroll Lock LED is fixed to ON after enabling Instant Music.
2. When set to Instant Music mode, the system wake-up
features (LAN, keyboard, mouse, USB) are deactivated. In
this case, power up the system using the power switch.
3. If the system lost connection or did not detect any optical
drive, the Instant Music feature turns OFF (disabled)
automatically. A ³beep² indicates this condition.

One thing they forgot to mention, is you have to set the KBPWR jumper
to +5VSB, so that the PS/2 keyboard is powered all the time. This
will allow the ESC key to wake the system, causing the BIOS to start
up in Instant Music mode, rather than starting the POST. If you don't
have a CD in the drive, it will shut down again. Use the power button
on the front of the computer case to cause a normal POST and boot
sequence.

As for the Voice POST, there is a setting in the BIOS for it. I don't
think there is a jumper present. The sound output should be mixed
with the AC97 output and go to the Lime Lineout connector. I don't know
if Asus bothers to connect the output to the PC speaker. The two jumpers
would have to be on the FPAUDIO header, to get the sound routed to
the rear speaker, if you happen to have an incompatible case audio
cable.

I have the manual, you didn't need to type all that stuff out for me.

Well this part makes sense though, except I couldn't eject the CD either. If
I have to open it up and change a jumper I'm not going to be bothered, I
really just wanted to try it.

There's nothing wrong with any of my connections, I just don't get any voice
messages, ever. Unless maybe there are only in built messages for "No CPU
installed" and the like, and not for booting or other stuff?

I'm not using the front panel audio as I got a case without it.

Everything else works great, but it's still annoying to think of features
not working. The +5VSB is probably the reason for the Instant Music not
working though, you are right. They really did **** up by not mentioning
that in the manual.

If you look in the manual on page 2-21 as follows;
3. Keyboard power (3-pin KBPWR)
you will see that it is mentioned in relation system wake-up by a key press.
Although it does not mention 'Instant Music' here.
