I was at the computer fair yesterday and saw one of those neat game
port/2 USB brackets pictured in the P4P800 manual. So I bought it and
installed it and connected the USB part to USB56.

Now for some reason, my SideWinder USB version doesn't work in ports 5
or 6 (power light doesn't come on and it's not detected). But it works
fine in the first 4. So I thought, shit, the bracket is stuffed or
worse, the connectors are fried.

But then I tried my two other USB items, my mp3 player and my webcam,
in ports 5 and 6 and they both detected and both worked.

So what's going on? Is it possible that some USB devices don't work in
ports past 4 or something? Or could it be some other mysterious
factor?

Sadly those are the only USB devices I have to test with.

Is the Sidewinder known to draw more than 500ma ?
It could be a power overload.

Examine the connector and pins on the Sidewinder, to see if
something is worn or bent. Does the Sidewinder seat all
the way into the connector ?

No idea. I have no other USB devices connected.

Nothing wrong with that, like I said it works fine in the four back
panel ports. And other USB works fine in the two bracket ports.

It sounds like you have the wire connector installed right on the USB56
motherboard connector, and enable in BIOS, based on other devices working OK.

I have had USB devices where their (poorly written) driver would install
against a specific USB port, and would not work if I moved the device to
another port. I had to painstakingly remove the driver, and allow the
device to trigger a fresh install, this time on the new (different) port.
