i have 4 hd's for storage... at the present time i have a promise controller
on one of the pci slots and the 4 hd's hooked up to the controller card...

can't i just hook them up to the raid pri/sec ports on the mobo and use
them? these disks are NOT identical and they are formatted (ntfs) and data
is on them that i do not want to lose

thanx in advance

NO, it is _not_ possible to change Raid controller from Promise to
ViaRaid without data damage!
You must backup your date on the Promise Raid, configure a ViaRaid and
reinstall your backup.

Good luck!

You loose the data on the disks even when creating a
raid1 array on the P4P800. I installed a second disk
on the raid sec port and thought that I would not loose
the source, but everything was gone. Had to restore
the partitions from precautionary ghost images.

Hi,

I think the other posts have assumed that your are running some sort of RAID
array.

From what you've written, it sounds as though you aren't using RAID - just
the controllers. Can't see any problem at all in hooking them up onto the
RAID controller - that's how mine are configured (i.e. as independent
drives - not configured in any sort of RAID array).

All you need to do is enable RAID in the BIOS to active the RAID
controllers. Don't bother going into the RAID configuration - that's only
if you want to see up an array.

Cheers, Cliff

cliff.. you are correct.. i am not running any sort of raid array and don't
want to... all i want is to eliminate the controller card..and use the raid
controllers as simple ide ports... i don't want any sort of raid array and i
don't want to lose the data on the hd's... thanx for the insight
