Are occasional blue screens on startup likely to be memory related? I am
using Crucial memory that is supposed to compatible with the board.

My OS is XP Home, btw

Which message does the blue screen show?

(You have DE-activated "Automatically restart" in Advanced System
Properties - Starting and Recovery Settings)

If you have a STOP 0x00000X message, google for STOP 0xX ...

Thanks Roy. Things seem to be behaving themselves since I moved RAM chunk 2
to slot 2 (it was in slot 3)

Sounds like a job for memtest86, from memtest.org. Better to test
with a dedicated memory tester, than wait for your OS to crash.
If you find memtest hangs part way through a test, enter the BIOS
and disable "USB Legacy" support.
