Hi. Does this motherboard often have faulty ide ports? Are there funky
new cables I'm supposed to be using? Nothing I'M doing seems to get
this homebuilt new thang a-workin'. The pc checks the bios and al that
but the things supposedley getting power from the two ports are doa.
Just wanted contrasting perspectives before the replacement drive..

I doubt it, what are the exact symptoms?

Are you sure you have the drive(s) jumpered correctly?

It might help to start out in simplest config, one drive
jumpered to Single (note that WD drives and random others
have a different single than master jumper setting)
installed on IDE0, end of an 80 conductor cable.

At that point, does the bios detect it properly? If so,
what doesn't work? If Windows Disk Management can't see the
drive, run the HDD manufacturer's diagnostics. If Disk
Management can see it, see what Disk Management can do with
it.

Are you sure you mean IDE (ATA), or SATA?
IDE (ATA) can use the old 40 conductor ribbon cables but it
forces ATA33 mode which is sub-optimal performance. The 80
conductor cable can be a ribbon cable or rounded, the blue
end plugs into the motherboard socket and the black end into
the Single jumpered drive (or master, including if using
Cable Select).

If it is an IDE drive, you have to plug a PSU connector into
it, it doesn't get power from the data cable.
