Hello,

I have one 200 Gb Sata disk in Raid 1+0.

Can I add a second 200 Gb disk, to make a real Raid 0 (or a Raid 1)
without loosing the data on the original disk ?

Does anyone ever tried that kind of stuff ???

Thanks

Benoit.

Never tried it, but I doubt your data will stripe to each drive. Best advice
is to read the manual.

The manual says:
with the Promise Raid you could duplicate one drive to make a raid 1
nothing about stripping the datas on the second drive.

Nothing about the ICH5R ...

The only time I saw that kind of feature, it was with a
Compaq SmartArray card.

Transforming a raid 1 to a raid 5, by adding an other drive is rather
nice !!! ...

i'll try when I'll have a full offline backup ...

Salut Benoit,

first, use Symantec ghost to make an image of your existing drive and
partitions. Burn it on a DVD if possible.
second, Reformat the hard drive that is in use.
third, install your two harddrives in a raid configuration on the Promise
378 controller and create the raid array.
fourth, put your dvd disk in the dvd drive and install your ghost image.

Now, you might need to install the promise raid drivers again after the
ghost partition is applied.

Norton Ghost 9 supports RAID level 0 and 5, but the question that needs to
be answered is: Will image software take a single drive and reimage it onto
a RAID set?
Benoit T: Use the Intel RAID set. Stay away from the Promise. Been using the
Promise over a year and it was starting to get flaky. Switched to the Intel
and so far so good. And the Promise firewire chip is flakey as well.
