Read through a couple hundred posts first and haven't seen this problem
come up so I guess I've done something wrong with my install!

Everything on my new board is running fine and no conflicts showing in
Device Manager. My problem is with the on-board audio. When I first started
playing files that go through the SW Synth the playback was stuttering and
crackly. If I reinstalled the driver in XP everything was ok for about 30
minutes and then it was crap again. I thought I had the solution when I
uninstalled the drivers and the Soundmax control panel. It's been working
well for a couple days but now I find that the speed is inconsistent. The
sound will speed up and slow down! It's not crackling anymore but obviously
is useless for listening to Frosty the Snowman.....

Anybody tackle this already? I can't be the only one!

thanks
Jay

As a follow up to this, I uninstalled the sound drivers and the sound max
program. Let XP detect the on board sound and installed the driver off the
CD. Haven't added the soundmax program and everything's been fine. &*^%* !

The Soundmax software should not affect the quality of the sound. Did you
install the Intel INF update first? I had everything working fine here until
realizing how lame the software was compared to that bundled with even the
most basic Creative Soundblaster. Got an Audigy 2ZS and haven't looked back.
Asus should make more of these boards without onboard sound. Onboard sound
and video is probably good for business oriented computers and nothing else.

Uhmm.. as for onboard audio, for the small increase in price per board, ASUS
has given the ability to do Voice
POST Reporting, which i find handy for finding out which component isnt
seated just right sometimes.

Really! I've gotten along without that for the last 18 years. If it's
trivial then one shouldn't have to be told what the problem is. If it's
serious then chances are you can't do anything about it anyway. Reeks of
gimmick for the end user IMO.

Getting along with, and finding useful are 2 different things. Im sure lots
of people got
along with two sticks to make fire, but a lighter is better.

As for 18 years, great for you, when you show me the boxes of punch cards
with your
programs on it, you can call me a 'end user'

Gimmick! A COM2 serial port bracket or better still a COM2 port on the same
bracket with the game port would have been more useful to me. I'm yet to
hear the "post voice" say anything and it'll probably remain that way for
90% of end users. It would be interesting to find out how many end users
actually bought the board for that feature but Asus may have upped the ante
here forcing others to follow in true "monkey see, monkey do" fashion.
Welcome to higher priced ($20 - $30 more) motherboards even though it
probably costs Asus less than a $ extra to add the feature.

I probably messed the order up somehow but until I got into my OS I
couldn't activate the POST anyway. It really is a gimmick. Why not print
the errors on the boot up if any?

Umm, IT DOES.

The vocal post reporter is an ADDITION, not a replacement for the
traditional POST screen.

Also Vocal post will tell you about cpu/ram WITHOUT a videocard, can the
regular bios do that?

Good point. Like I say, for me, the audio POST didn't seem to work (guess I
put everything together right the first time :) )
