I am getting terrible average access times in all the benchmarks (25ms and
up). The Maxtor drive is the 120gig model (6Y120M0), running XP Pro SP1a.
Anyone have any ideas?

You need XP SP1 to see above 130 GB.

Well, I just got a 160 gig Maxtor, and it seems to do fine, but Windows XP
sees it as a 130gig, the bios sees it ok though, still seaching for
answers...Do you have the SATA on in the bios?

Do a Google search for how to "slipstream SP1" into Windows XP. You'll find
lots of sites that describe the process for making a new Windows XP with SP1
CD.

No, you can use your original XP and the downloaded SP1 (and any other
fixes you want to add)

www.google.com

search for 'XP Slipstream SP1 CD'

Since you already have WinXP installed, the easiest way (by far) is to go to
Windows Update (on your start menu) to download and install SP1 directly.
Although slipstreaming would save you time when doing a fresh installation
(especially if you plan to do this repeatedly), it takes a while to make the
CD and it also requires you to re-install WinXP.

If sequential transfer rates are as expected and CPU use is normal the disk
is probably running in "silent mode".

Well Hans, and Chuck McDonald if your still listening.

Here's a nice page about how/why you only see 127-137GB of your 160GB+
drive currently:

http://www.seagate.com/support/kb/disc/faq/137_overview.html

Well, download SP1, and install it, and (hopefully) things should turn
out like this:

"If your Windows XP CD does not indicate SP1, then your boot drive
partition will have a maximum size of 137GB. After the OS and SP1 are
installed, any additional gigabytes will show up as unallocated space on
the drive and you can easily create a second partition with DiscWizard
2003 or the Windows disk management tools. Also, if you prefer to have a
single partition, third party applications such as Partition Commander
from VCom or Partition Magic from Powerquest may be able to stretch the
partition to annex the newly found capacity."

Click back a few links, and checkout slipstreaming SP1 into your XP cd
to save yourself trouble if you ever need to reinstall :)

Hey 2003 pictures :)

Its good that you are trying to repost the help I offered you, but you
run Windows 2000, which is what this link is for, and Chuck runs XP Pro.

Which, btw Chuck, this may help you if you havent followed the other
trailing thread. You may just need to

start->run
'compmgmt.msc'
Storage->Disk Management

See if your space is sitting there for ya :)
