I am thinking about building a new computer..

I want to do a lot of video work and want something faster than I have now.
This will be for "work & Play"
Looking at

P4C800-E
Intel 3.0 GHz 800 FSB
1-2 Gigs of PC 3200 RAM (Type? What is the best???)
2 WD Raptor HD in Raid.. (For the main storage and capturing Video)
I have a 300 Watt PS (Do I need to go larger?)
Video card ATI All in wonder 9700 W/remote (What I have now)
Other in the computer
1. USR Modem v.92
2. WD HD 120 Gig
3. Sound Blaster Live (Plat)
4. Plextor 708 DVD-R
5. Plextor 48-24-48

OS now is W2K but I will change to XP Pro in the new computer.

If you want 2 gigs, this is best done with 4 modules of 512 MB each
(unless you want a BIG hole on the wallet). Name-brand stuff, of course.
Samsung or somesuch should do.

I would never, ever recommend RAID 0 unless it's really, really
necessary (i.e. very high STR for capturing uncompressed HDTV or
whatnot). In typical desktop use there'll not be much of an advantage,
but the risk of total data loss is more than twice as large compared to
a single drive. Get one 73 gig Raptor and another 7200/5400 rpm IDE
drive for backups (possibly external). Maybe two of those in RAID 1. If
you must use RAID 0, get two 73 gig Raptors plus a backup drive.

That could be a POS or plenty, more details are needed here. Do not
skimp on the PSU, it's an important part.

Only do that if you can see a real advantage. No reason for throwing $$$
out of the window.

Great motherboard. I have the P4C800 Deluxe that came out first. Best board
I have ever owned and I've owned a dozen different ASUS boards. The Intel
3.0C GHz with 800 FSB is the way to go. I got one and I'm overclocking 10%
to run at 3.3 GHz. Running very stable. If you are not going to overclock
then the PC3200 memory is the way to go but if you are going to overclock a
little then get some PC3500 or maybe some PC4000. I have 1 Gig of the XMS
Corsair PC3500 running at 2.3.3.6. Some GREAT memory. OCZ is also good. Two
512 MB chips is the way to go on that board. Don't waste your time trying to
put in four sticks. You won't get them to work on dual channel. The ATI 9700
is OK for now. You can get a faster video card in six months when some of
the newer chips come out. I have an ATI 9800 Pro. Not much better than a
9700. Now the 300 Watt Power Supply is definitely not enough to handle what
you are wanting to put in it. If you are running two hard drives, ATI 9700,
DVD and CD burner plus sound blaster, modem and I'm sure you will have five
or six 80 mm cooling fans. At least you should have that many to keep it
cooled down. Then it will take at least a 400+ watts power supply to run
everything smoothly. I went to a site no to long ago and you keyed in your
system components and it calculated the total power it would take. Don't
remember the link. My system came out to 420 watts required. I have a 500
Watt Antec True Power Supply. XP Pro is the way to go. Will be the number
one Windows OS for at least two more years. Longhorn won't be out until late
2005 is what I read.

Best place to by components is newegg.com. Definitely the best prices and
fast shipping.

Good luck on the new system.

Your power supply is too small. You need 400+Watts in a QUALITY brand power
supply to drive your list of devices.

Let's not be absolute about such things. A quality 300W PSU can handle
that kind of load. The important thing is to get a 12V rail that can
handle 15A or more. Some 300W PSUs can do that, but not all 400W PSUs
can do that.

We should do ourselves a favor and stop insisting on people getting high
wattage PSUs without understanding exactly how meaningless a
single-number wattage rating really is.

Thanks Stephan,

As far as the Raid goes I always back-up any important files to DVD. Also I
create a Quick restore disk so incase of a crash I can be back up and
running in about 15 minuets. So nothing the worry about there.

The PSU is a Question.. I guess I will need to investigate the power
requirements of everything in the computer and go from their.

When it comes to the OS I have them all... eh eh eh (Needed for the job
and is a nice write off)..

Thanks Dan,

I won't do any OC at first. The computer will get a real workout rendering
videos (My playing some times takes hours of 100% CPU usage (10-18 hours
straight). Cooling becomes a big factor when doing that. Right now I have
3 - 120mm fans in the case.

Hi Dave,

I will investigate this point and most likely upgrade to a good 550 - 600
Watt PS. That might be overkill but then when I upgrade again I should be
OK on the PS..

You are absolutely right Max!

But, if I was to error, I want it to be on the too large size.. Ha hahaha
Also I need to look at what the "next generation" is going to need so I
don't have to buy another PSU for a few years..

That's a decent point. However, you will probably need to replace any
PSU you buy in the short term with a BTX model in a few years anyway.

My personal preference is for efficient, high-quality, quiet PSUs like
the Sea sonic Super-Silencer line. They have a 400W model that might
appeal to you.

Dan Spears - Are you saying that 2 Gig of memory in four 4 512 MB sticks
will not work in a P4C800-E Deluxe?

unless you have a good case already, i'd spring for a good one.

www.thermaltake.com

i got a Xaser III, V1420A. 420W Power Supply, with 7 fans. 2 in the
front, 2 in back, 2 in the side over the processor, and 1 at the top
of the case.

best case you can ever own. I'm running a GeForce 4, 2 hard drives, a
cd-rw, and 2.8ghz 800fsb...

i leave it on day and night, never powering off...
and right now, it's only 28.9 degrees Celsius..

He needs to fork out the bucks for a good and expensive name brand supply. I
just had a supply go bad and fry two mother boards before I realised that
the supply was bad. I'll never buy a cheap power supply again! Antec 430
watt true power is the way to go ;)
