P4C800 E Deluxe bios swaps boot hard disks

There are 3 hd's in this pc. Two in IDE connector and the last in
Ultra ata connector. All hard disks are parallel ide and no raid.
Primary ide disk is what I usually boot from.

Every now and then I get a blue screen, not less than equal was the
last one. And after that pc tries to boot from Ultra Ata. Bios has
swapped those two boot devices. Why?

OS is XP pro sp2.
Cpu 3GHz
1G ram
HD's 80G Maxtor boot disk
120G Maxtor secondary ide
160G Samsung Ultra Ide, second boot disk
Display card Ati Club 3D 9800 pro 128

I'm using the P4C800 Deluxe motherboard (not the "E" version) and had
similar problems:

1. Swapping the priority of boot device: Some older version of BIOS is the
cause of this problem (version 1010 if I'm correct). In my case, upgrading
to version 1016 or later kills the problem. Currently, I'm running version
1019 and everything is fine.

2. BSOD: I've found it to be the RAM problem. If you're not an
overclocker, try Samsung (original) or Kingston RAMs for better
compatibility and stability.

Worth giving it a try.

Good luck.

Thanks for help.

It is just a bit strange that error and boot drive change occur at the
same time. I have had other blue screens, expecially with a certain
buggy game. They dont affect bios settings. Besides, I must say, I
have checked ram with memcheck for a while ago. Ram was ok then.
Someday I have to test with one ram device, buying new ram is a bit
expensive now for me. Another problem is, that this is a random
problem, it takes time to know is it fixed or not.

I have had this problem with several bios versions, this last happened
with 1019 or 1021, now it is 1023.

Fyi: I do not overclock. There are problems enough even now.

Leif
