P4C800-E Deluxe and Firewire Ipod

I just built a system based upon the P4C800-E Deluxe motherboard. Everything
is working quite well, with one exception. My new 30GB Ipod is not
recognized and assigned a drive letter. It is getting power (I can see the
charging light flashing), but that's about it. I don't think the culprit is
the Firewire port itself because another device, an external 80GB SCSI
drives works perfectly. All my driver are up to date, and I am using the
latest 1011 BIOS (I could update to 1013 if it would help). I regularly use
the Ipod as a backup device on several systems, and except for this one, it
is always recognized immediately and assigned a drive letter. I have also
rebooted the Ipod. Any ideas?
 
Don't be so sure the firewire port is not at fault. Many of of us P4C800-E
Dlx users cannot reliably use the onbaord VIA firewire ports. Try using an
add-in card to see if your problem goes away (it does for everyone else!)

Asus doesn't seem to want to acknowledge the issue, nor post a fix for it.
 
You may very well be correct, but that is not an acceptable situation. The
onboard Firewire port was a significant inducement for me to purchase this
otherwise fine board. I use more Firewire peripherals than the average
non-Mac user. Thus far, I have tried four: the Ipod, an external 80GB hard
drive, and external DVD-RAM/R drive, and Canon DV-Cam. The hard drive and
cam work, while the Ipod and DVD-RAM drive do not work. In doing some
research, I found what appears to be an experimental 'Via PCI Latency
Driver' but I am afraid to use it, as everything else is working well and I
don't want to jump from the frying pan into the fire, so to speak.

Ironically, Apple recommends Via-based firewire cards for use with the Ipod.
If this in, fact, an ASUS issue, they should correct it on an expedited
basis. This is an excellent motherboard and it is a shame to mar its
reputation and performance in this manner. When I get a chance, I am going
to email them in the hope that they can give me some decent advice. Thanks
