Does anyone here run Windows 98 SE on this board? What are the issues? I
simply cannot stand Windows XP and the way it seems to randomly change
on every reboot. I have checked for viruses and it is clean. On one
boot, Norton Anti-Virus Autoprotect loads and runs fine, the next reboot
it is unabled. Other issues as well, but too long to detail. This was a
fresh install, not an upgrade.

If you think Wxp has issues with your setup, 98se will really have them.
It's really hard to make 98se stable enough on that hardware at those
speeds, we use XP and it's stable as a rock on that mobo, our only glitch
is an external usb hard drive, if it's on the durn thing tries to boot to
it,
we have an older bios revision.

I am not going to badmouth W98SE since it is definitely one of the better MS
offerings and is still going strong. However, I think you should put the
work into solving your XP issues since W98 is on the edge of obsolesence and
soon new hardware and software will be XP only. If your P4C is like my P4P
you already are seeing features in the BIOS that are for Win2k or XP only.

Yip, agree with Bill.

"I simply cannot stand Windows XP and the way it seems to randomly change on

What you describe sounds like application errors / bugs, not XP. May not
be... could be memory issues or a multitude of other things, but on a
correct system XP does not randomly do anything buggy.

No offence, but if you can get the time, then attack these issues one at a
time. You may have to upgrade some s/w (IE nortons), but at the end of the
day there is such an enormous chunk of new functionality in XP that using
Win98 is like working in a silent monchrome world while XP has it all - you
can turn all the crap off of course.

The P4C800 is an excellent board - if you are using Win98, you are not able
to tap all its capabilities by a long shot.

A dual boot on a new partition would be a good way to start.

XP is not the problem. Compared to XP, Win98SE is a POS. Don't know about
your other issues but regarding NAV autoprotect, there is/was a known issue
with two components (rcman.exe and sbdrvdet.exe) of Creative's Audigy 2
drivers for XP preventing certain services (including NAV autoprotect) from
starting at bootup. The proper way to troubleshoot services not starting is
to run msconfig and disable startup programs until you find the conflicting
culprit.
