Hi.
I've been using the MB onboard Soundmax for months now with out a
glitch.
Yesterday I installed an additional HD as a slave and formated to
store new data.
For some wierd reason, after reboot the windows media player stopped
playing
any Audio so I unistalled all xvid, ffdshow and AC3 filters.
After another reboot the media player would not open and insisted that
I reinstall it.
After reinstalling Media player (9) my Soundmax controler app started
saying that there is no Audio Playback Device and everything is grayed
out
in the Sounds and Audio Devices.
I upgraded to latest Bios Version and still nothing.
Tried unistalling and reinstalling the WDM_AD1985 (older and newer
versions)
and still nothing.
No audio Playback Devices available and I can't find a way to undo
damage.
Any help appreciated,
Etay.

The easiest way to get out of a mess like that is to use System Restore. Start->Help and Support->Undo
changes [...] with System Restore. Roll back XP to a date where the audio was working.

Hi Tony.
I tried restoring to an earlier setting but NO LUCK.
I saw to more threads with a problem similar to mine.
Had I known the reinstalling windows XP would solve it I would but
I;m not sure of that either.
Any other suggestions would be most helpful.
Etay.

Ok, but at least you should now have back an audio playback device after doing a system restore, even though
there's still no sound. Since the audio died after the HDD was added, does the SoundMax device share the same
IRQ as the HDD? In fact, does the SoundMax device share an IRQ with ~any~ other device?

Hi Tony.
Soundmax not working even after System Restore.
HDD does not require any IRQ's and even so, there is an IRQ reserved soley
for the Soundmax.
Thanks for helping out.

Have you tried zapping the BIOS?

Hi John.
What do you mean by "have you tried zapping the Bios?"
What's Bios Zapping ?
Etay.

I think he means using the jumpers to reset the bios. The jumpers are
on the motherboard. Mainly used for forgotten passwords, but can reset
the bios to it's default state also.

Good luck,

Alan

Hm well a HDD does not but the controller it is connected to DOES need
an IRQ. Didi you enable a formerly disabled port of the onboard ICH5
or promise controller? This way you will need another IRQ you did not
need before.
