Steve Sr.

For those of you that need this cable I found one that works. I gave
up on getting one through Asus. Asus suggested going through their US
distributors but none I contacted knew of it or the part number to
order it. So I dug around in my junk box. See, there is a reason to be
a pack rat!

The correct cable is one of the 2 old standards. The one that you are
looking for has a 1:1 relationship between the wires in the ribbon
cable and the pin numbers on the DB-9 connector. For example wire #1
in the ribbon cable (marking stripe) goes to pin #1 on the DB-9
connector. Be careful when you put the IDC header on the other end of
the cable as the housing on the MB is polarized and you can't just
plug it in backwards if you get it wrong.

Regards,

Steve

I went through this myself, and eventually (with lots of help) found
a source for the cable. Full details on my serial port saga web
page below :-).

(I still have no idea why the manual shows all the pinouts in detail for
every single motherboard header *except* COM2).

I'm looking for a case recommendation... I had been using Elan Vital
T10 cases because they were a "constant" (always available); but now
that I can't get them anymore I'm looking for a new case manufacturer
with similar longevity. Ideally, it would have four 5.25 external
bays and one floppy bay. I'm looking at four internal drive bays to
run a 15000 rpm scsi raid 1+0 array. I'm going to be using dual 3.06
Xeons on a PC-DL m/b. Oh, and I'd prefer the case be "computer beige"
and not black or silver or any other neon color. I'm mostly concerned
about adequate cooling.

Anybody have any favorites they'd like to recommend?

Antec SX1000II.

This case (or variations imported by at least a dozen other case
companies) is _extemely_ popular these days and has been for at least
a couple of years, so I don't expect it to go anywhere any time soon.
I'm not a big fan of the door over the 5.25" bays, except for a
server, but you may like it. Many places for mounting 80mm fans,
including in front of the 3.5" drive bays, which will be nice for
those 15k rpm drives.

The link above is for Antec's VAR version, which comes without a power
supply. I just built a similar system with the same motherboard,
except into the smaller SX600II case. Keep in mind you're going to
need an EPS12V power supply for that motherboard and 95% of the cases
available will come with an ATX power supply that you can't use.
Antec's True550 EPS12V is a good choice for a dual Xeon system. I'm
not sure you'll find much better.

ProVantage is a good place to buy the Antec VAR cases. I haven't seen
them many other places.
