My system contains an Asus p4b266 with a lot of USB connections. Only
recently I'm using these more intensively, amongst others for a USB ASDL
modem. How can I see wether they are USB1 or USB2?

regards,

With XP just plug in a usb2 device, it'll tell you if it's usb1!
W2ksp4 should too.
Mobo manual will too!

Looking in the Device Manager, will give you some idea whether the
drivers for USB2 are installed or not. Look for the word "Enhanced"
in one of the entries or maybe "USB 2.0 Root Hub", as an indication.

In terms of the controllers inside the Southbridge, for USB, there is
generally one controller for USB 2.0, which is shared over all the USB
ports. On the USB 1.1 side, there is a USB 1.1 controller for every
pair of ports. So, this means a pair of adjacent ports shares up to
12Mbits per second. Since the fastest ADSL I know of in the standards
is somewhere around 8Mbits per second, USB 2.0 is not required for
ADSL. (Similarly, if the ADSL modem was Ethernet connected, the
interface is usually 10BT, as 100BT performance isn't required.)

If a USB2 device is plugged into a port that only has USB1 drivers
or hardware support, the OS will give some kind of warning. Otherwise,
I've never heard of any bandwidth monitoring programs or the like,
for measuring USB performance. It would be cool if there was one.

BTW - If the ADSL modem gives you trouble, it will be because it is
drawing more than the 500mA allowed for any USB device. You could
either switch to an Ethernet ADSL modem, to solve the problem, or
you could try a "wall wart" powered USB2 hub, to try and get more
power. A USB2 hub is nice, because it reclocks the data and separates
the ports on the hub from one another.

Also, looking in the manual, the two USB ports in the I/O area on
the back of the computer are USB 1.1 only. There is a header with
two more USB 1.1 ports on the motherboard as well. If your
motherboard has the optional USB 2.0 chip soldered to it, there
will be four more USB 2.0 ports available, and you would need a
PCI adapter plate or equivalent to get at them. In other words,
you have four ports USB 1.1 only and four ports USB 2.0/1.1
available, so which port you use will tell you something about
what hardware capabilities they have.

Paul

Thanx for your input.

In device manager I see the following (translated from Dutch)

Asustek USB Enhanced Host Controller
NEC PCI to USB Open Host Controller
NEC PCI to USB Open Host Controller
Standard Universal PCI to USB Host Controller
Standard Universal PCI to USB Host Controller
USB-base hub
USB-base hub

USB-base hub
USB-base hub

I have put the ADSL modem on one of the 4 adjacent USB ports.
I don't experience any problems with the modem. Received no warning.
I was just wondering wether USB1 would be fast enough for modem speed 384/96
kbit/s. down/upstream.

I'll try to find the manual...

usb 1 handles almost 1MB/s that's ~1000KB/s or 10000Kb/s,
which is about 20 times faster than your downstream!

Good, so it won't be the bottle neck.
BTW just installed Intel Application Accellerator, and now it shows some
different under USB...
