Recently built a machine using my old P4B266, but instead of using an
external soundcard, I used the onboard CMedia 8738 chipset, but under WinXP
everytime you play a soundclip even the logon or off, it will hang
completely.

With the audio hardware disabled it was working perfectly, with no lockups
at all.

I'm using the most up-to-date driver from Nov 2002 (via winupdate) and Bios
1010.

Anyone got any ideas, or had similar problems?

Regards

My 2nd P4B266 works great. Blew up the first one with a bad BIOS flash.

C-media ver 5.12.1.643 Although mine is "Not digitally signed"....curious I
just noticed that.

Did this start immediately after you clean-installed XP? Or after
installation of other programs? Does the problem occur while playing other
sound files? Music CD's, midi files, MP3's, etc? Just repeating the trouble
shoot wizard :)
