Starting to replace the thermal grease with Arctic Silver Ceramique I
found that I cannot remove the HSF. After releasing the retention
levers there is some movement, but that's all.
Can I please have a pointer on how to proceed?( P4 Northwood 2.4 G)

With thanks

Some thermal pastes do really "glueé the cpu to the radiator base. If this
is your case, no way to remove it. But if there is "some movement" like you
say, it should be the vacuum between cpu and radiator that hinders the
removal. So try to carefully rotate the cpu on the base until you free the
processor.

Hi
I have to apologize for not expressing myself properly. I have trouble
with the retention mechanism, or better the retention mechanism hooks,
so that I can lift the fan and heatsink off the cpu.

Which is the way to go about this? I'll be very grateful for any help.

Best......

Here's a repost of a responce I made to another group where you asked this
same question. Instead of posted this separately to several groups, it's
better to cross post it so all responces are put in the same place..

Oh now I know what you are talking about. Yes there are plastic "hooks" that
hook onto the retention piece made on the Mobo. The easiest way to deal
with it is take a flat head screwdriver between the leg of the clamp and
the retention device on the mobo while lifting slightly. If you look at the
pictures of them installing the HSF here, you'll understand what "hooks"
I'm talking about and where you need to pry. Just don't bend the plastic
legs any more than you have to.
