P4 3.4E(?) on a P4P-800?

Howdy,

I'm running a 2.4 (400 FSB) on a P4P -800 (no series deluxe or anything
like that - just "800") and I'm considering upgrading to a 3.4E series
processor. I've got 2 gigs of Kingston RAM (400) but because of the
speed of my processor, it's only running at 266.

Anyone have any thoughts on this upgrade? I'd love to hear them...and
no, money isn't the issue. It just feels like I'm throttling the RAM
down because of the FSB restriction. I'm not a gamer but I do a fair
bit of video editing and some other processor intensive applications.

Thanks!

First, you check that your new processor is listed here:

One thing a BIOS upgrade will do for you, is add a microcode
update for the new processor. There was a problem with SP2,
where old microcode caused the Windows boot process to stop.
Doing a BIOS upgrade, before installing the new processor,
will prevent that from happening.

I trust your power supply is not some "300W weakling", as
some people push their luck with upgrades. Your new processor
will draw a few extra watts.

Other than that, enjoy your upgrade :-)

Thanks for the reply Paul. I'm currently running 1021b3 - I'm assuming
that this means I should be ok. It's the latest I find on the .de FTP
site which is where I usually pick my BIOS updates from.

And yes, my PS is fine.

Yes, 1017 is the minimum BIOS version. Anything later than that
should be OK.
