Is it possible to use a XFX GeForce5500 256DDR AGP Graphics card on an
Asus P3B-F mainboard? If not, any suggestions for replacing my aging
Elsa Gladic GTS 32MB AGP card?

Thanks,

Steven

Don't see any reason why it wouldn't work..

Thanks Bill, and Robert, for your replys. Is that the main
requirement/thing I have to look at in an AGP card for my P3B-F, "as
long as it supports agp 2x"?

Thanks again,

Steven

Hi Steven!

My Matrox Parhelia arrived and I have already tested it thoroughly.

I am very impressed about the 2D-Performance now. I thought that my
PIII-S is already limiting the Windows Performance, but the Parhelia
showed me new things. Really a great Card and available for AGP 2.0,
too.
Probably 66MHz AGP only!!! Nothing for BX133 Systems.

Very interesting is the GeForce ti4x00 range (BX133!!). But I would not
change anymore! Matrox is the best for me.
You could also buy real 3D Monster Cards, with AGP 2.0 Compatible. I
think they are called QuadroFX, also from Nvidia and to be found at PNY.

Be sure that the Card is not a AGP2.0 1.5V only, also called "AGP 3.0
Universal 1.5/0.8V only".
Check for two notches on the card. One Notch is a sign for a 1.5V Only
Card. One Notch 3.3V (as the BX needs) Cards are rare, or maybe not
existent at all (AFAIK - Two Notch AGP2.0 works in the P2B Series, P3B
etc... Two Notch "AGP 3.0 Universal" is 3.3 and 1.5V).
However, the Notch prevents from connecting the false AGP Card,
respective the false Voltage. When it fits it works. Hey, this is BX...
every compatible GfX Card works there. ;-)

OC?ing the AGP will cause loss of SIdeband Addressing, as it is not
stable over 75MHz. You will not find Fast Writes.... The Cards may have
FW, and may have SB (The only extra AGP Feature with the BX Chipset).

The Parhelia is fortunately supporting SB. :-)
GeForce 256 DDR (Creative?s version - very fast) does not. Only FW. But
good for OC ..up to 100MHz AGP (BX150!). And very good overall
Performance, especially 2D!!!!!. Nice Card!

Best Regards,

Daniel Mandic

P.S.: Every 4x Card supports 2x and 1x properly, as well. 2x is pretty
fast, 4x w/o FW is nothing. FW needs at least 4x. If you are going to
use your P3B-F at BX100, then I would suggest you to lookout for SB
(sideband addressing) compatibility, at least.

yup...

This is a good page and should set your mind at ease. The FX5500
is listed here as universal.

For some historical perspective, I like this page.

Hello Daniel:

Interesting, the Matrox site indicates the following about the Parhelia:

"*Supported only on motherboards with a 1.5v or 0.8v AGP slot. AGP 1x
and 2x not supported on motherboards with a 3.3v AGP slot."

Years ago, I use to own a Matrox Mystique card and was highly impressed
with the quality and customer/technical support of Matrox products.
Have not had any resent experience with the company/products though.

Everyone, thank you for the information,

Steven
