Hello-
My rig for downloading, fooling around, testing, surfing has an Athlon
800 Mhz.
My friend gave me his old PC which is essentially the same setup but
with a P3 866.
I want to keep one of them. Which is the best processor and why?
I tried to find shootouts/comparisons/etc with no luck.
Just in case: I *think* The Athlon is 200 Mhz FSB, while the P3 is
100Mhz.

Thanks,
Rob in NJ

It's splitting hairs, either is similar performance.
Athlon had a per-MHz lead but with the P3 having higher MHz
and SSE support it might be slightly faster. The typical P3
motherboards were less buggy than early Athlon and with the
P3 using less power, creating less heat, the P3 would seem
to barely be superior.

Even so, if one of the motherboards is good quality and the
other junk, that might warrant as much weight as the other
factors.

Keep both. You can use one as a file server and the other as your
workstation or use one to play with new distributions while the other is
stable. It's also nice to have a backup machine in case one dies.

Performance wise, the two boxes are pretty much identical.

Don't decide based on the processors because they are too similiar. Make
your decision based on which machine is more stable. If they are both
stable then pick whichever has the best quality components. Lastly, pick
the prettier one.

Actually, they are VERY similar n looks. Both are Compaq Presarios from
99 or so. So they have that doofy aqua plastic crap on the front. The
P3 is one 5.25 bay short on the front though.
Thanks for the input people!
