I'm making a big assumption that your two computers are networked
already. If not, the following will be of no use to you :-)

Use VNC or one of its improved variants. Set up a VNC server on the
basement 'puter, and use VNC Viewer on the den 'puter to see what's
happening on the basement desktop. If you want a bit of stealth, you
could keep the monitor of the basement machine switched off, while the
machine itself and the camera would be online.

Here are the links:

Hope this helps.

I have two computers one in the den and the other
in the basement wood workshop. Both computers
have a USB Webcams by Creative lab. Is there a
simple free program that will access the basement
computer from the upstair one and through the web
cam show me if my kids are fooling around with the
tools. Their lying little critters and would like to catch
them.

Sounds like what you really need is a webcam server. The VNC programs are
great for controlling other computers, but the video update is rather slow
usually.

The old freeware webcamXP would work great. Here: http://tinyurl.com/62s5f
is version: wxp_freev1.04.790.exe - link will be good for a few days. I'm
not sure if this is the last freeversion or not.

File Unavailable

Your transfer cannot be completed. Most likely the file has exceeded its
allotted bandwidth or has been removed by the original sender or a
recipient.

Due to overwhelming load, YouSendIt has disabled unlimited sharing of all
files regardless of file size. YouSendIt may alter this policy in the
future.

The two computers are networked through a
DLink router. When I run viewer it asks me
for the server, I enter the 4 numbers assigned
to the basement system , say 192.145.0.6
(These are not the actual numbers only fictive
ones), then it gives me this error "Unable to
connect to host:Connection timed out (10060)".
In The VNC Server property (User-Mode)
under the "Connections" tab I don't know if
I should check "Only accept connections from
the local machine" and add my numbers with
the (Add) tool. If and when I do, do I delete
the (*) then add my numbers? Do I change
Port? I'm confuse, since I'm not sure how to
configure it to make it work. The program
does not come with instructions and this 61
year old grandpa has only been computing for
a very short time and don't know a hell of a lot
about these things. When I go in the "Legacy"
tab and import the VNC 3.3 settings it returns
that "Imported VNC 3.3 settings successfully".
Can you offer a little extra help? ...but you
don't have to.

Gill,

Glad to help out in whatever way I can. Although I'm not a networking
expert, my guess is your firewall (on either computer) is probably
blocking the attempt to connect. You will need to check this.

But before that, check out the basic connectivity between the two systems:

- From your upstairs computer, open a command prompt (Start / Run; type
"cmd" without quotes; press enter)

- Type (without quotes) "ping 192.145.0.6" substituting the actual IP
address of the basement system

- If you get "Reply from 192.145.0.6 ..." then at least you know basic
networking is working.

If the above is OK, then you will need to check your firewall settings
(assuming you have a firewall set up) on both computers. On either one,
allow the IP address (the 4 numbers assigned to the system) of the other
system. For port number, enter 5900. I'm afraid I can't provide more
specific steps here since I don't know about your specific firewall setup.

Comments on what you tried already:

- Do not check "Only accept connections from the local machine" because
you actually need to accept them from the other one. If you added your
IP address here, just delete it.

- Importing the VNC 3.3 settings isn't likely to have done anything for
you, since you never had VNC 3.3 set up in the first place.

HTH.
