I inadverdently overwrote an existing PPT file and
replaced it when I didn't intend to. Is there anyway of
retrieving the original file prior to being replaced?

You're out of luck unless you have a backup of the original somewhere.
Sorry.

You might want to use Shyam's Sequential Save addin so you always have
an extra copy around. http://www.mvps.org/skp That won't help this
time, but perhaps it will save you some grief in future.

[CRITICAL UPDATE - If you are using Office 2003, you should install this
update as soon as possible. From PowerPoint, choose "Help -> Check for
Updates".]

Hello,

Even in the latest version of PowerPoint (2003), there is no built-in
(in-the-box) capability to save multiple versions of presentations so that,
for example, if accidently delete or overwrite the most recent version
there will be be an older version that you can use. However, if you are
using Windows SharePoint Services and saving your presentations (and other
documents) in a SharePoint document library, you can use SharePoint
Services to enable versioning so that you can go back to previous versions
of the presentation if you accidentally save over and existing presentation.

However, if versioning or some other form of automatically making backup
copies of your presentation files directly from PowerPoint (not requiring
SharePoint or some other external document management technology) is
important to you (or anyone else reading this message), please send your
feedback (in YOUR OWN WORDS, please) to Microsoft at:

http://register.microsoft.com/mswish/suggestion.asp

As with all product suggestions, it's important that you not just state
your wish but also WHY it is important to you that your product suggestion
be implemented by Microsoft. Microsoft receives thousands of product
suggestions every day and we read each one but, in any given product
development cycle, there are only sufficient resources to address the ones
that are most important to our customers so take the extra time to state
your case as clearly and completely as possible. Each submission should be
a single suggestion (not a list of suggestions)
