FP has started telling me that files on the server are newer than the ones
on my C drive, and did I want to overwrite.
I rarely go live, and edit files.
It is not only one or two files, but quite a few, and it seems like it keeps
changing.

I do two webs. One I used the FP publish feature to post to a server with
FP extensions.
The other I have to use FTP to upload the files.

Now both webs are doing this.
I have done "recalculate hyperlinks" and I have done a complete repost of my
complete site.
no luck.
Webs are located in the same location on my C drive since day one.

Under tools/options/publish tab:
it is set to publish only the changed pages, by comparing source and
destination.
But this setting would have nothing to do with the web I use FTP to publish.

I've searched the help files, and I tried to search this newsgroup, both
ended with no solutions to this problem.

I've exhausted all my resources.

Have you compared your system clock to those on the
servers? If there's two great a difference, problems such
as you describe can occur.

Hello Jim,

Strangely enough, it keeps getting off.
Just about 4 hours ago, I set it, and when I read your note, I checked it
again.
It keeps jumping ahead by 15 minutes.

I have one of those radio controlled clocks in my ofc.
I just now checked http://www.time.gov/timezone.cgi?Pacific/d/-8/java
for the official U.S. time, and my clock is correct.
But both of my networked computers are 15 minutes fast. . . . . . this
keeps getting thicker!

They have a mind of their own. Now what?
Is 15 minutes enough to cause this problem?

Just checked another thing about this clock-
I fixed the time on the clock, and still had the same notice.

On the web that I have to ftp, I looked closely at some times.
I fixed a web page, and immediately opened ftp and uploaded, then looked at
the times.
My system said 20030928 2:04
their system said 20030929 19:04

But the web that is ftp'ed is uploaded to a server in Oregon.
and the web that published via FP is published to a server in Georgia. 2
totally unrelated servers.
both are giving me the same warning about overwriting a new file.
Now I did do a search on google on computer clocks and found out that there
is 2 clocks in our computers.
what good that does me right now, I'm not sure.
But I'm wondering if the incorrect time is keying off another clock on my
Win2000 system (which I do my web work on) that is incorrect.

Jim,

I've got a note into our technician, and he is going to have the clock on
the Win2000 server checked. Since both of my systems keep resetting
themselves to the wrong time, there is something that my 2 computers
(Win2000 & WinXP) keeps taking instructions from.

After that is solved, I will look into the following confusion:

Immediately after updating a web page, I open ftp.
The date on the file shows: 20030929 22:16
I look at the date on the hosting server location and make a mental note.
I upload the new page to the host. The host date now changes to 20030930
05:00
IT ISN'T EVEN SEPT 30, where in the devil is it getting this time??

Fixing the time on the clock isn't the same as fixing the time stamp
on all the files.

This is a difference of 1 day, 17 hours, and that will certainly cause
you problems. It can't possibly be a time zone difference.
But the web that is ftp'ed is uploaded to a server in Oregon.

At this point, I would probably check my clocks, then publish the
entire Web site, then see if the problem goes away.

The objective of publishing the entire site is to synchronize all the
time stamps.

Hello,

Further reports and research. Checked the domain controller and it was only
16 minutes fast. Fixed that.

I do 2 FP web sites.

Site #1 is hosted in Georgia (Interland), with FP extensions and uses the FP
feature to publish.

Site #2 is hosted in Oregon (PCIWest) on a server with NO FP extensions and
I ftp the updated pages.

Observation with testing using Site#2..
web page modified 13:33.
FP closed.
ftp immediately opened.
web page on web hosting server shows a date of 20030929 1:35
uploaded
page on server now shows a date of 20030930 20:34
checked my atomic clock. time is 13:34 or 1:34 in the after noon.
date on uploaded page is 7 hours ahead.

part 2 of test.
reopened FP.
altered same web page.
FP closed.
ftp immediately opened
web page on web hosting server shows a date of 20030930 20:34
uploaded, "warning: newer version of dining.htmexists in the destination
folder. Copy the file anyway? Yes/No"
answer yes & page is uploaded.
page on server now shows a date of 20030930 20:35

Well, there you are.

o You update a file at 13:33 (PDT).
o You FTP to site 2, which dates the file 20:34 (UTC (aka GMT)).
o You update your copy of the file at 13:34 (PDT).
o You FTP to site 2, and the FTP process notices that the version on
the server (20:34) is newer than your version (7:34).

Do I surmise correct that you're using a stand-alone FTP program
rather than FrontPage? If so, the failure to account for time zone
differences is a problem with your FTP program and not with FrontPage.
But perhaps you can configure the time zone difference in teh FTP
program.
