17 year word processing user here. My colleagues and I
have been noticing that overstrike mode will go on
seemingly by itself. I thought maybe we were hitting
control and some key but haven't figure out which key.

On many keyboards -- the INSERT key is positioned immediately adjacent to
the DELETE key -- and so an inadverntant tap on the INSERT key will turn on
the overstrike function!

Watch the status bar -- if they OVR is showing -- you're in OVERSTRIKE mode!

And on many keyboards it's right next to Backspace as well. All too easy to
hit by mistake.

The best way to avoid that happening again is to go to Tools, Options,
Edit and check "Use INS key for paste." Then if you accidentally hit
the INS key again, Word will perform a paste action. But at least you
will know right away that it's happened.
