Oversize FAT source files

I think I overdid it... I managed to capture a 4+ gig
source file (35 mins on DV-AVI setting) onto my old second
HDD which is FAT. I keep meaning to upgrade it to
NTFS...one day.
The clips arrived OK in my Collections, and will load in
the preview window, but both video and audio are badly
scrambled when played.
Does this sound like a symptom of an oversize FAT file, or
do I have some other problem?
How exciting, my first problem of any significance in a
year of using MM!!
Tks

Glad your excited.... I'd expect it to lock up somehow rather than play at
all.... If you can import it as a single clip, maybe save it as a high
quality WMV before you lose it.... but maybe you can re-capture it again and
just see if it'll work better after changing your drive to NTFS.

One thing doesn't fit.... 35 minutes of DV-AVI would be more like 6 to 7
Gigs of video file.... maybe it stopped at about 20 minutes.

Hi there,

Are you using one of the programs that manage oversized files on Fat and Fat32
drives? Western Digital used to do one.

If your video is scrambled from the beginning it will not necessarily be a hard
drive issue . Data is data is data and at the beginning of the capture there is
no size issue. Your problem may well be due to how the clips were captured.

How was the camera connected to the computer? No form of USB will not do the
job at DV-AVI speeds
Did you perform a hard drive defrag before the capture?
What speed is your CPU and how much RAM is there?
What Mode is your hard drive running (DMA) if less than 4 you will have data
write problems, you need Mode 5 or 6
Is Data Write Behind available and enabled?
What data transfer mode is the hard drive set at? You need 32bit.
Although I break this rule often, you should not have any other program running
when doing a capture.
If you are connected to the internet then disconnect and disable your Anti
Virus software and perhaps the firewall.

Remembering that MM2 is written for XP only and that with all things there are
limits you should take a look at the minimum spec for a computer running your
version of XP and then improve on that a little, you can consider that as
being the absolute minimum when running Movie Maker 2.
