override laptop fan speed with acpi

I have a laptop (made by a german company called targa). The fan comes
on full power every few minutes or so, depending on what I am doing.
This is quite loud and slightly annoying, the rest of the time it is
not on at all.

I was wondering if there was a way to increase the low/off fan speed so
that it needs to run at full speed less often. i.e. can I make it so
that the fan is always running at at least 40% of full power, perhaps
using acpi in windows?

Does anyone know of any software that does this?

1. Check your power management program for the options. Most laptop
mftrs. include proprietary power management software.

2. If the power management options are already set correctly, then your
laptop is probably overheating. Contact the laptop mftr.'s tech
support.

There is no proprietary power management software.

I'm not sure why you think it is overheating; it is perfectly normal
for the cpu fan to kick in on laptops when they are put under load.

I will email Targa though, and see if they have anything that does what
I am after.

I think your laptop may be overheating because you said this in your
first post:

"The fan comes on full power every few minutes or so"

You also said "depending on what I'm doing" but didn't say exactly what
that was. Obviously if you are trying to do some incredibly heavy
number-crunching with something like Mathematica, that would make
sense. Or if you were trying to play a game on a laptop that isn't
suitable for gaming...

Otherwise, for normal use a laptop's fan shouldn't be coming on "every
few minutes or so". Since overheating is a common problem with laptops,
that is why I suggested this might be happening to yours. Naturally
since I cannot see your laptop or know what you are doing, this is just
a suggestion.

Thanks Malke. Sorry, i should have been clearer. I use the laptop as
a media center, so when I am watching films it comes on perhaps every 5
minutes or so which I think is pretty reasonable. However when it is
doing absolutely nothing, the fan still comes on every 10 minutes or
so, which I think could be better as it is only an athlon64
3000@1800Mhz. Perhaps I will replace the thermal compound on the HSF,
I have done this on a laptop before and it helped quite a bit.

Anyway, the original question still stands if anyone has any ideas.
 
speedfan doesnt work with laptops. the only temperature i was able to
get was the HD one. I think perhaps i might have to go down the
hardware route.
