OVERLAY 2 separate video "streams"

I can't find the correct term for what I want to do.

Let's say I have a video in whatever format. What I want to do is take two videos and
then "overlay" them such that the 1st video occupies the upper 3/4 of the screen and the
2nd video occupies the lower 1/4 of the screen. IOW, this isn't an end-to-end combine.

Next question. Is there any automagical process that would take certain information
(whether text from a file or a jpg or gif) and "replicate" them X times to coincide with
what I want to do re: overlaying the video? For example, is there software that I could
feed it 10 jpgs and say "replicate each jpg 10x30fps" such that each jpg would be put into
300 frames (10 seconds) of video? Then, I want to take that and do the overlay/frame
process described above. I'm basically trying to take data from a text file and replicate
it such that it will be synchronized with the upper 3/4 video.

It doesn't seem to be a split or combine or merge. The closest terminology I saw was
"picture in picture". Is this the term used for placing 2 separate video streams
side-by-side on ONE moviemaker output screen/file?

yes... it's a common term for it... check the Editing Movies > XML > Script
Types > Picture in Picture page of my site, along with the Editing Movies >
Transitions (the PIP section at the bottom of the page)...

with just a single video track to work with, it's usually achieved by using
a transition...
