I have an XP1800 running at 52 degrees C, is that too hot?
Not if that is a,"constant" load temp.I little high maybe but nothing
to write home about as AMD CPUs are guaranteed to around 90 Deg C.

I can recommend a cheap/better HSF unit if you want better
cooling,

Cheap, good and comes with it's own,"Arctic Silver" type thermal
compound.Bargain of the year IMHO for AMD CPUs.

Note:Lapping/polishing the bottom of the HS can give a few degrees
lower temps and thermal paste should be applied(Small amount to the
top of the Raised Athlon core).

My O/C XP1800 usually sits around 41 Deg C idle at this time of year
and maxes around 50 Deg C under constant heavy gaming loads.
HTH :)

PS
Ambient room temperature affects CPU temps as does untidy wiring in
the case/Airflow restrictions and dust and crud on the Fans.
Around April in the UK I have a,"Spring Clean" and clean my HSF setup
and my back case fan etc.

No, that's fine, assuming the temp is accurately reported by the
motherboard. Usually the larger question is "Is it stable?".

Stability can be tested in several ways, one of the better ways
being Prime95's Torture Test, "In-Place Large FFTs" setting, ran
for several hours.
