I've been looking at the p4c800-E mboard but got scared away from
pentium 4 because of overheating problems I've heard about for the
prescot chip. The Northwood or what ever it is now hard to get.

William,

I recently built a P4P800-E Deluxe system with P4/3.0C Northwood CPU. The
system runs perfectly and very cool.

P4 Northwood available at newegg.com:

I'd recommend the Zalman fan:

Newegg has both the P4C and P4P mobos in stock. I received great service
from them.

I agree with John. Absolutely no issues with the Northwood on the
P4C800E-Dlx board. I do a lot of extended gaming and use the stock
Intel fan. It never rises much above the high 30C - very low 40C
range. At idle it sits around 30C - 30C. It is a non-issue. As John
indicated, the Northwoods are easy to find, I picked mine up in a
daily deal from Newegg.

My P4P800-E Deluxe w/Zalman 7000 fan:

Idle:
CPU: 33C
MB: 36C

Stress -- Prime95 (max heat test) for 10 minutes:
CPU: 50C
MB: 38C

The Prime95 max heat test makes the temps go up higher than any applications
I use. Also the fans go to max speed when Prime95 is running. The moment I
exit Prime95, the whole thing "calms down." In particular, the CPU temp
drops immediately. (I don't know what Prime95 does, but it's impressive to
watch the results on the temp gauges.)

When I was researching my new system, I was deciding between the P4C800-E
Deluxe and the P4P800-E Deluxe. They are very similar. It seemed that the
P4Cx was a better choice for heavy-duty networking, but that the P4Px was a
good choice for a home/office machine with lots of speed and power. (I'm
sure others can give you a better explanation of the differences.) I got
the P4/3.0C and 2GB Mushkin RAM and the machine flies! I use the machine
for Photoshop and operations that took up to 30 seconds or more on my old P3
machine now take only a few seconds. Amazing.
