Overheating CPU Damage?

Is it possible to damage a CPU? So that it works a little? Or do they just
die and thats it?

My PC seems to be crashing out on me everytime theres some extra workload
(normally games). Overheating/damaged graphics card, M/B, or CPU is what I
presume.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Check all your cooling fans at once...expecially the one on the cpu...

Crashing and lockups can be caused by over heating... but it's not likely
that heat would do "some" damage...chances are your cpu would fail entirely.

It's the motherboard or power supply, not the CPU.

To clarify. I meant IF something is damaged, failing, it wouldn't be
the CPU unless it IS overheating, but even then it's not really the
CPU that's the problem.

Intel don't die.

Weak Power Supply Unit?

Untrue, the P4 thermal diode cannot react as quickly as the chip can
heat up, so they can also be damaged from rapid overheating.

The typical situation is when the machine is cold, off, and powered on
without a 'sink... rapid temp rise occurs before diode can register
it, core expands faster than spreader and spreader detaches from core,
core fries.

hi, i had a very similar problem wth a computer i just built and underload i
couldnt keep it stable.

i changed out cpu,s memory modules gfx cards and format/reinstalls of winxp.
it was by chance i tried filling up all memory slots with 4*256mb ddr3200
and it now runs flawless, problems went away.

no matter what configuration i use the memory in it fails under load ,
unless all slots are full or fsb is less then 110mhz.

i now have my 2.53 oc'ed stable at 3.04gig

stress tested with memtest(using 512 meg samples) and prime95 (6hours)
