Overclocking the Sony E540 21" CRT

I've been researching a couple of Sony 21" monitors, the E540 and the
more expensive G520P. The E540 is supposed to be lower resolution,
but several people on Google say they run the E540 at higher
resolutions and refresh rates than Sony rates it at.

I'm wondering if the lower rates are Marketing schemes and not
technical/hardware limitations.

Wondering how many E540 owners are "overclocking" their monitors ;)

Yes you can run some monitors at higher resolutions or frame rates than the
manufacturers state. However, you will usually find that the quality of the
display suffers, and it may fail prematurely (and permanently).

Quality suffers for a variety of reasons including insufficient dot pitch
(leading to bluring), and control adjustments (position, size, skew and
more) being outside of their specified ranges.

Reliability suffers simply because you may be overstressing components.

The manufacturers of most computer monitors are reasonably honest about
their capabilities and press reviews can be brutal in this respect. So if
you want to try, then go ahead, but if it doenst work, you'll only have
yourself to blame.

If the monitor is well constructed it will not work at all when using
frequencies beyond their specifications. If it does work however you risk
the horizontal drive of your monitor, it will get too hot and burn out. So,
not a wise choice. Besides that: for the cheaper monitor they use a tube
with less bandwith so your picture won't be as sharp as the G520P.

I have both monitors. They are mostly the same monitor. The only difference
is the G520 has dual inputs and a button on the front that selects color
temperature profiles. The E540 looks just as good as G520 and can do a
readable 2058x1536 resolution if needed. It is just marketing specsmanship
saying the E540 has less resolution. I never run over 1280x1024 except 3D
games, as everything gets too small. If you need more desktop realestate
than that, I sugest a dual monitor setup as the the E540 is such a bargin.
Years ago I paid a lot more for a 15" NEC monitor (back when NEC was good).

Thanks for the feedback, Kent. I've seen a lot of speculation that
they are 'nearly' the same monitor.

Would you buy another G520P, or would the E540 do the job for you ?

My interests run to gaming, photoshop, photography, and looking at
technical drawings. I'm more interested in the big view than multiple
monitors.

Would you buy another G520P, or would the E540 do the job for you ?The E540 does the job just fine. I have an E540 and E500 dual monitor setup.
My wife uses the G520 that I got it from the Salvation Army for $10.
