Iwas reading an article on oc'ing and did not understand why the guy had to put a different cpu in his board to get it to boot after a BSOD .It seemed a strange thing to say .
Does this mean that if I oc and BSOD then I'm stuffed unless I have a spare cpu lying around .Surely if you oc too far you can revert back to some default settings without having to put in another cpu etc etc .
can anyone clarify this for me .
Thanks in advance folks .

Here is the part of the article that puzzled me .

http://www.gamepyre.com/reviewsd.html?aid=901&p=4

Next I decided to see if I could get to 3.4, to really try to push this chip to its limits. It seems like I found my limit, no sooner did I get this chip set to 17x, than my computer BSOD'd and refuse to boot any further. This is where things got tedious.

Up out of its spot the case came, and I ended up putting my old processor back on the board for long enough to boot, letting settings reset themselves for the slower chip. Once this was done I popped back on the 5000+ Black Edition again and it worked like a charm, once again starting at 2.8 ghz without settings changed. All that was left to do at this point was set it back to 15x, then go about my gaming.

I'm not sure why he did that either, as resetting the bios would knock things back to defaults (plus, it's unlikely that it won't even get to the bios screen if it BSOD's anyway).

The only thing I can think of was that he used a software overclocking utility instead that would load everytime he starts windows. However, if that was the case it wouldn't load with safemode. :)

He says he used ,

I used an ASUS tool for overclocking, known as AI Booster. This program allows you to overclock on an ASUS motherboard without having to mess with BIOS settings at all. The first thing I did before the overclock was load up CPUZ to take a good look at what speed I was already running at.

I have this facility and was thinking of using it but don't want to use it if I have to change the cpu on BSOD's . Has anyone used this tool and can confirm that I can get back to defaults via bios or safe mode ?

i have that and have used it, caused my system to lock up a few times but a reboot put everything back to what they were before, if you want to OC i suggest using the BIOS

Yep, that is a software tool that you can run in Windows - really easy to use and it should go back to default settings if it does lock up. Like Me__2001 suggests though, I would use the BIOS for any permenant overclock. :thumb:

Thanks guys I'm going to have a play after New Year when I've sobered up that is . Was just reading up on the oc'ing to let all the info mull over in me mind .Wanted to start of nice and easy before I went messing with the bios . Seems the reviewer could do to have a read here before he posts anymore confusing reviews .
