Hello there. I have just already bought a new set of 1gb RAM, and a new 6600 GT graphics card and nw i would like to overclock processor ?!

How do i do this ?!

I have been on my BIOS, and I can't find where you go to overclock it ?

Please help thanx

ok i hate poking about in the bios so i've never bothered overclocking but i've just found this program that can overclock for you sraight from the desktop so i thought i'd give it ago and it seems to work

you should download this to see what motherboard you have first

http://www.cpuid.com/pcw.php

then look here to see if its on the list of supported boards

http://www.cpuid.com/clockgen.php

just dont go mad!

my P4 3Ghz is according to Cpu-Z im now running at 3.3Ghz stable at 32 degC (see Pic)

When you say stable, do you mean prime95 stable?

i dont know what that means exactly

but it was at 3.3Ghz and i managed to play GTA Vice city for around 45mins and it didn't seem to be getting any hotter than usual which i thought was kinda strange as i only have a stock HSF and one lousy case fan, so im not 100% confident that it is working

did you press the "Set Value" button?

Download THIS then install it, then then go to "Options" then "Torture Test"

Then set it to this:

And press OK. It will stress the CPU at the overclocked speed and try and make it error. If it errors, it's NOT stable. If it errors, reduce the speed and try again. Leave it funning for a good half hour or so, people say 24 hours but tbh i'm not that patient and have found that if it errors, it does so within about 15 minutes!

Oh, and watch your CPU heat up as you press "OK" on the above screen :D:D

Oh lol you obviously did set the value if CPUID is seeing it!!

This is my computer running at 3.07GHz after 7 minutes of running Prime... No errors yet (See the temps - that's with an SP-94!!)

ok i just ran prime 95 for 15minutes and there were no errors and temps were around 45c at 3.3Ghz, obviously the temps aren't accurate as im using a software sensing program so there probably around 50+

p.s what CPU are you using, im using a P4 3Ghz

I use the 2.8GHz Northwood, the one down from yours.

Did you use the MAX power torture test? Your chip is running nice at 3.3GHz expecially with your cooling!

i know my cooling is pretty crap my system usually crashes at those temps, i did the one shown in the pic you posted, but if i try to go higher than 3.3ghz my onboard sound starts getting lots of interferance at 3.35Ghz and gets really bad at 3.4Ghz shame because i reckon it could go to 3.5Ghz easy

thats a good overclock on your 2.8Ghz! what are the temps like for general use?

My 2.8 runs ok at 3.2GHz and it sits at about 39 to 42 degrees for general use...

Interesting about your onboard sound, wouldn't have thought overclocking would affect it... i guess if the same controller is used..

Did you lock your AGP/PCI bus?

what does locking the agp and pci frequencies achieve?

i think i'll leave it a 3.2Ghz it doesn't seem unstable at all its been on all day and hasn't had any problems and its quite cool aswell

I believe it makes things more stable though i'm not entirely sure - maybe someone else could explain?
