Overall Vista Bugs

I have been testing both x86 and x64 since day betas were released to GP. In
my 31 years business and personal experience with systems and software, IMHO,
these betas have been released with toooooooo.... many problems. Vista at
this stage is not fun; it's down right ugly.

There are certainly bugs, but Vista is generally running reliably for
us. We have had no BSOD or other major crashes.
The driver problems are annoying, but are understandable.
My primary concern continues to be the incredibly poor design of many of
the user interfaces. Windows Explorer and the "security" features are
especially bad. Microsoft really needs to re-think the user interfaces
and use designs that are clean, functional, simple and overall user
friendly.

I guess everyone's experience is different. It's been rock solid for me on
my laptop. Every driver found, no problems, no one single blue screen. My
desktop took a little more work to find drivers, but I've gotten everything
except my HD Tuner to work and it is quite solid too.

My impression is that it works well on 'common oem boxes' (mine are Dells),
but struggles with more 'put together' boxes, particularly with more
bleeding edge technology like SLI.

Makes sense -- make sure the masses work first.

I agree. And I just read on another site that MS is 'testing the waters' with
a $ 449 US retail at release. Also, just read that SP3, a major update being
released 1st half of 2007 and rumor has it MS is working on a SP4 for XP.
Just how far out is a reliable, functional and friendly Vista? BTW, try using
the search function to find files.... a real 'E Ticket' ride. :)

Take the pricing with a grain of salt. There are seven sku's and only the
Ultimate edition would be more than XP Pro full is today.

No propblems on my installation... I agree, it seems to be better supported
on more common systems, not the cutting edge. I works just fine on my Dell
Inspiron 6000. I only got one BSOD one time when resuming from sleep. Vista
found all my drivers, except one for my phone modem and one for the audio.
Windows Update found the drivers for both very easily.
I know I only have 512mb memory, but although startup was pretty fast with
nothing running(just after install) after installing a few programs that run
at startup, it has become very slow. That is the only problem I have that I
would like to see fixed: improved performance.

Jack,
Did you upgrade an XP installation or did you perform a clean install?

Beta's released with bugs?! Say it ain't so! :)

Bugs are a natural part of a beta program; be it from Microsoft or some
individual software designer. You need to report the bugs and the "ugly"
stuff you find to MS. That will help in the development and help the
software.

Personally, I've been using Vista for quite a while as well, and I find it a
GREAT OS. Even in Beta stage.

I think the issue is that most bugs and ugliness is so obvious that MS
didn't need
an open beta to find them.
In short all MS team are probably busy enough finding problem they know
about and
finishing features that they didn't need to have an open beta that early in
the development process.

For me the bug I'm finding seem to be so gross and obvious that I'm pretty
sure thousands of
people already reported all the quirks and miss functionality that its a
waist of time to report them.

They do admit that some of the features are still a work in progress. The
release date was pushed back a couple months, and they are scambling to get
more work done with it. Some features are still very much in pre-mature
almost alpha stage, while others are nearly complete.

I can see where you're coming from with some things being so obvious. But,
most of the obvious stuff has been noted by MS as to being still in
development, so not to expect it to work (System Restore, for example).

Formatted drives using SATA 150. I did not rec'v any BSOD's. As observed by
the many positive remarks, I agree that Vista was rock soild; but so has XP.
The functionallity and compatability issues with MS sister software,
particularly using x64, are an example why I feel it is too early for public
beta release. It wil be interesting to read the next weeks 'ed ops'
technicals re: the GP LH release.

Major DITTO....! well put.
