Suggestion for MS: in your RC1, please make Explorer seem more responsive.
Sometimes, it takes several seconds just to load a window, like Documents.
In addition, when you log off, there is weird zig zaggy spectrum of colors
along bottom of screen. Speed up startup and GET RID of the blinking when
switching visual styles. And improve customer experience with UAC - I know
that in builds 5472 & 5456, UAC has been optimized and toned down more, but
refine it as mucha s possible. Finally, optimize Vista to run smoothly and
WELL with 1 GB of RAM - its annoying to have the recommendation be 1 GB but
then say that it is PREFERRED to have 2 GB of memory (Aero specs). My system
can only go up to 1 GB of RAM and I want MS to do its best to improve
performance based on a system with 1 GB of RAM - for most people, 1 GB seems
more reasonable than 2 GB!

MS: I will only install and keep using RC1 when it comes out only if there
is substantial improvement from the s l o w beta 2. So please do
your best and show your committment toward producing an awesome OS.

got dialog box saying it may affect sys stability...will it affect the
stability of my system?
 
"sys stability" = "stability of my system," n'est pas? What happened when
you tried it?

didn't try it yet...i will though. by the way, do you speak french? "n'est
pas?" - is it not?
 
power setting mode you select has a major performance effect.
have found that by using the power saver mode my system was only performing at about 47% of rated.
switched to balanced power seting and it increased to 100% or rated.
check where yours is set.

It says that for any process that is running. It has not effected the
stability of my systems. It also does the same thing for XP and I have
done that with them without becoming unstable.

after doing so, stability seems to be fine...actually am noticing the speed
increase more. thanks guys.
 
I think the vast majority of Windows crashes, other than hardware issue
from bad driver, are caused by explorer.exe crashing. I found that
lowering the priority only made the system slower, so the next thing I
tried was raising the priority. I noticed a slight speed increase from
doing that, although I was looking more at increasing the stability of
explorer.exe and thereby increasing the stability of the whole system. I
don't think I would take it any higher than the 'High' setting.

Zaz, I'm using a DELL inspiron 6400 with 1 gig ram, and a 2gb USB flash
drive as a superfetch cache, and everything is super-responsive, when I have
see little slow downs or have duplicate drive folders in Office 2007 I tell
myself that this is beta software it aint perfect, and computer software
never is. I have done the win386, win3.0, 3.11, win 95, 98 and XP software
installs over the past 20+ years and vista has been the smoothest ride yet.
I am using the beta in the workplace and have had to install MS Virtual PC
2004 to keep using some DOS software that looks after accounting stuff etc
and WIN98 works well under that, allowing me to use my DOS software.

Is your hardware OK? I don't have any issues with the beta as such and I am
sure that RC1 will see some fine tuning to assist those with older hardware,
but in the meantime if the beta is no good for your hardware, then such is
life. bummer :)
 
In a nutshell this is what changing the priority does.

Increasing the priority of an application means the application gets more
CPU time and attention. I don't know the specifics of Vista, but in general
all operating systems work similarly.

For example, if the computer runs 10 applications, IE being one of them, the
CPU does them in sequence. Each application gets about one tenth of the
attention of the cpu.

If you increase the priority of IE, then IE gets more CPU attention than the
rest. It is more of an art than a science to achieve optimal system
performance. You may think of it this way, if you fathered 10 children and
everyone of them requires attention; which child should have a higher
priority?

In fact, a process with a higher priority will tend to always run if it has
work to do, even to the detrement of all lower-priority processes. That is
why (in general) it is best to keep all programs running at normal priority,
and just have programs that you wish to run in the background at a lower
priority... because if you have one high priority process that is using 100%
resources, only other high priority processes will be able to get cpu time,
while normal priority processes and below will hardly run at all.

The warning's been there since NT 4, probably even earlier. I've never seen
it cause an actual problem--not that I don't believe it never will... It's
just a matter of bad luck and confuse the scheduler at "just at the right
time" as priorities get reshuffled...

This situation is known as a race condition; in otherwords a dead lock. You
ever get in a situation in a parking lot where everyone is waiting for
everyone else to may way so you can move? It does happen in an operating
system, there are so many things happening seemingly all at once.
 
We're still talking BETA here...

I'm on a seat with 512MB's RAM right now and while I'm not running any major
apps on it, response time is acceptable to me. The only complaint I have,
right now, regarding performance, is when one deletes folders with many
subfolders and files... takes forever, it seems, and if UAC is turned on, be
prepared to wear out your patience as you acknowledge too many dialog boxes.
