Whenever I attempt to send or delete mail,or download mail I am unable to
locate, I recieve a message that reads "Documents and Settings\John
Smith\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook1.pst. File is
in use and cannot be accessed." However I am unable to determine what other
software is using it,I have attempted detect and repair, tried reinstalling
office all to no avail

Your main OL file is called Outlook.pst, not Outlook1. Try using File, Open,
Outlook data file to find Outlook1 and move items into the main OL file. Then
close OL1.

The default Outlook PST file can be whatever the user chooses. It isn't
uncommon for it to be Outlook1.pst. This name is usually used by Outlook
when Outlook.pst already exists.

John,
what default PST are you using?
Right-click on Personal Folders, select Properties ... and in the General
tab select Advanced. Look in Filename.
Also, in Tools | Email Accounts | View or Change existing email accounts ...
where is Outlook set to deliver new email?

If this is a case that Outlook.pst is your default PST and delivery PST and
it is locked we need to determine why it is locked. Locate that file and
ensure it is not set to read-only.

I have this issue too, and I have verified that the *.ost file is NOT set to
read only. Some things I have noticed:
1. Running Outlook 2003 in CACHED mode (relatively new capability). My
company's IT has deployed this capability for home-office people using VPN to
connect to the corporate network - in hope of reducing the occurance of
lost-vpn connection.
2. Message started after installing Business Contact Manager (BCM)
3. I removed BCM and the message went away.
4. I installed MSN Searech Toolbar - and the message returned.
Summary. I believe the outlook.ost file is being accessed by Outlook and, if
installed, BCM and MSN Search... and it is not wired to support this kind of
multi-application access. Sure wish I could find an answer, have been
scouring microsoft support website. Perhaps the answer is to stop running
Outlook in CACHE mode.

Possibly when connecting to Exchange. I doubt that combination would have
been thoroughly tested but it is a combination I'll certainly look at in the
future.

Thank you for your interest/reply.
Update: I switched Outlook to NOT use cache mode, and the "ost in use"
message has gone away. However, I also rec'd a message that Bus. Contact Mgr.
does not work unless using Cache mode. Any thoughts? Should I reinstall BCM
while running Outlook in non-cache mode? Any feedback is appreciated.
Regards, mb

"If Cached Exchange Mode is not turned on (enabled), Business Contact
Manager does not load. For more information about how to turn on Cached
Exchange Mode, see the "How to enable Cached Exchange Mode for your Outlook
2003 profile" section. By default, Cached Exchange Mode is turned on when
you configure an Exchange Server service in your Outlook 2003 profile."

I suspect you might have an issue with BCM. SP1 for BCM is installed?
Do you have any other accounts set up?
