Windows xp/professional - outlook 2003. The problem is
that when I click on "To" when trying to send a message,
I get a message "Address book could not be displayed.
Contacts folder associated with this address list could
not be opened, it may have been removed or deleted, or
you do not have permission."
Bottom line - I can't use my address book transferred
from outlook 2000.
How do I get out of this mess?
 
Your Outlook Address Book is actually just a separate view of your Contacts
folder...so if you have the Contacts folder, you can get the Address Book
back.

Go to Tools | E-mail accounts, select "View or change existing directories
or address books", and click Next. If you don't see the Outlook Address
Book (OAB) in the Directories and Address Books list, click the Back button,
then select "Add a new directory or address book", then "Additional Address
Books", and add the OAB. Then keep clicking Back until you get back to the
first dialog box, and go back to the Directories and Address Books list as
you did earlier.

Once the OAB appears in the list, select it and then click Change to make
sure the Contacts folder(s) you want to display are listed. If any of them
aren't listed, you'll need to enable those Contacts folders as Outlook
Address Books by right clicking the folder, selecting Properties, clicking
the Outlook Address Book tab, and checking the "Show this folder as an
E-mail address book" box. Make sure you restart Outlook after making these
changes.

The OAB appears within the "Existing directories and
address books" list. "Change" gets me two "personal
contacts" folders. Right click does nothing. The screen
provides two options "Close" or "remove". I don't get
a "properties" option.
 
Sorry, perhaps I didn't explain that part clearly enough. If the contacts
folders you need to appear in the OAB aren't listed when you click the
Change button, you'll need to completely exit the "E-mail Accounts" dialog
boxes, then go to your Outlook Folder List, right-click a Contacts folder,
select Properties, then the Outlook Address Book tab. That's where you'll
find the checkbox to enable the folder as an OAB.

Hi, Still stumped.

When I have OAB showing up on the Directories/Address
book list, I click "change". "Microsoft Office Outlook
Address Book" box appears. "Contacts:Personal Folders"
appears in box. "Remove Address Book" is only option. No
response to right click.
Am I missing something here? This is past the point of
mere frustration
 
Like I said -- you need to *completely exit* that whole set of dialog boxes.
When you are in the "Microsoft Office Outlook Address Book" dialog, click
the Close button. That should put you back on the "E-mail Accounts"
dialog -- now click the Cancel button. Now you have completely exited those
dialog boxes and can go on to the rest of my instructions. Go to your
Folder List, right-click a Contacts folder, select Properties, then the
Outlook Address Book tab, and check the box to enable the folder as an
Outlook Address Book.
